"Seized" wheels

I find that one of my older locos seems to lock up when the connecting rods change from one side of the axle to the other in either direction. What sort of play is allowable in the holes in the connecting rods and on the crank pins?  Or is there another reason?

Your wheel quartering may be out of alignment causing the 'lock' ups. Search this forum for "Quartering" ... do not include the " " quotation marks in the search field.

Also check the wheels are running true, if they are buckled or not straight on the axle they may be jammong against the chassis. There may also be a dry spot or dirt between the axle and chassis. Also check for fluff at the back of the wheels. Check the wheels first, then try a small amount of model railway oil at the lubrication points. Don't use 3 in 1 or similar.

By older locomotive, is it tender drive, thus pushing a 'lame' non-powered locomotive?

Quartering - check each side corresponds perfectly.

Check by gently rolling, where it gets 'tight'.

It can be loose linkages which interfere with other rods / screws etc.

Check the rods are nicely mounted - careful not to force - very easily snapped.

Are all rods actually straight? Might already be slightly bent creating tight spots.

The tiny rivets can be tightened in the linkages if there's too much lateral movement, but carefully.

Good luck!!

Al.
