Hornby r636 double crossing help

Hi everyone,

Part of my layout has the double crossing track on it. Inbetween the 2 rails, on the edges.. one side it appears to have a single "clip".. the other side has 2 "clips".

Ive always wondered, Does anybody know what these are for?

Do you mean these projections circled in red.
