Scott Maynard1707820282 Posted May 20, 2020 Posted May 20, 2020 Hi everyoneIm sure most people have seen the new Airfix bundles that have been recently promoted and they do indeed look really nice.My main issue with this however is all 3 of the kit/paint bundles are only provided in Enamel with no option to switch or purcahse an Acrylic bundle instead?I was really excited to get the Tank Starter - Pack 3 but as with the other 2, there is no option to order with Acrylic instead of Enamel. Acrylic is generally the more suitable and preferred paint not just for starters and in general, so I was just wondering why there is no option to buy with that? Nothing against Enamel or anyone that uses it, but just the option to choose what type of pains are included surely would have been more beneficial for everyone and opened these packs up to more customers?/media/catalog/product/cache/2/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/a/a/aa9997_tank-starter-hamper_1.jpg
peebeep Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 It's a very good point. One thing that's noticeable from posts put up here and elsewhere is that Humbrol acrylic has become difficult to obtain. The webshop has more acrylics available than it did the other day, but Hannant's are only listing a few acrylic sprays and no tinlets. Reading between the lines there appears to be a supply problem and this maybe why the sets are only offered with enamel paints.
Peter s Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 I've noticed a lot of Vallejo stockists are running out of model Air. I think its made in Spain so god knows what state the factory is in. Simply putting it on a plane may be very difficult. I'd assume Humbrol paints arent made in the UK (I've got a few but I can't see a Made in... on the tub) so I guess similar problems
peebeep Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 Up until 2012 Humbrol paints were manufactured in China. Since then the paints have been supplied by Rustin's, based in North London. Rustin's were badly affected by a fire that destroyed their warehouse in January 2018, but seem to have recovered since then, but the shortfall in supply of acrylic paints is curious.
Padefc Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 Ive found humbrol acrylic has always been way to hard to source since my modelling return just over 2 yrs I think hence I've a load of enamels I've recently been on a vallejo binge buying mainly in various set and yes I've had to use may be 6 different vendors through e bay an Amazon nobody seem to stock every thing I wanted and delivery time as expected have been somewhat delayed due to current situation
Peter s Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 I've found that too. I basically use 6 colours of model air a lot and another 6 less frequently. Colours like RAL71 have suddenly become scarce (even scarcer after I bought up a load... sorry!)There's a very nasty solvent used in a lot of scientific stuff called acetonitrile. It dissolves basically anything but if you swallow it it turns to cyanide in your cells.... You could buy it from a dozen places but then there was a fire in the one factory in the world that made it and all 12 sellers instantly ran out of stock. I wonder if there's a similar problem and one factory makes an ingredient many acrylic paint manufacturers rely on?
T2B Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 Oh I hope we don't end up with a long term shortage of Vallejo Model Air! I kind of really on the stuff now!! But getting back to the bundle issue. YES you would think offering an acrylic paint option would be logical as it would seem most modellers seem to work in that medium these days. When I joined a modelling club about 3 years ago they thought I was a dinosaur as I was still using enamels and brushes
Padefc Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 I don't mind using enamels although saying that sometImes it's the wrong finish but I do prefer acrylics if honest as far as Vallejo goes I've purchased between 100 -130 bottles in the ,ast few weeks mainly in aw sets a few have duplicate colours in admittly ive found you just have to check what is in the set before purchasing as to avoid duplicating colours but it inevitability will involve a few hours searching online stockists
