walkingthedog
I have notice on many of the threads, that users are blaming spelling mistakes etc. on the fact that there is not a preview option.I make as many mistakes as anybody else, but surely this is because we don't read what we have typed before we post it.What difference would a preview option make, you don't get one when you type an email or a letter, and a spell checker only checks the spelling, it doesn't tell you if it's the wrong word.So there, got that off my chest. Now I'd better read this to make sure it's OK.
bocaj
I think their should be a edit button incase you don't see the mistake until you have actually posted the post. Also editiing will help incase you forget to put something into the thread that could be quite usfull infomation.Every other forum I know have a edit button where you can edit your posts.Jacob

poliss
(Gets teachers red pen out). "I have notice". Commas where full stops should be. Report to the headmasters study after class boy!
walkingthedog
Which commas poliss?Didn't notice 'notice'. Preview option wouldn't have made any difference.
poliss
Should be a question mark after make. A full stop should come after letter.
walkingthedog
I agree about the question mark, but why a full stop after letter?
walkingthedog
The point is, would a preview option make any difference?I think Jacob's Edit option is a good idea.
poliss
Because I was taught that you shouldn't use commas before the word 'and' except in very special circumstances. I think it was Mr.Scott that told me that.
walkingthedog
Mmm, I wasn't taught that. I remember being told you should never start a sentence with 'and'.Shortly afterwards I found that very thing in a book. Didn't go down too well with the teacher. Postman Prat
I was taught that as well. Could it be a 'special' Geordie thing? I was also told not to start and finish sentences with 'And'. It might be acceptable here, though.I suspect WTD might regret opening this can of wormspoliss said:Because I was taught that you shouldn't use commas before the word 'and' except in very special circumstances. walkingthedog
I don't see how you can end a sentence with 'and'. Hang on I just did!You can start a sentence with 'and'. I remember coming across it in the book called Black Beauty.Took it to school, it was when I was in junior school, to show the teacher. Not sure what she mumbled under her breath, but it was probably smart something.

Postman Prat
That sentence ended with an 'And' quite legitably, didn't it? And so did mine!!! I've got a copy of Black Beauty somewhere - it's going to stay 'somewhere' because I am not going to turn the loft out just to find another sentence beginning with 'And'. I suggest that your teacher got confused and thought your name was Alec rather than Brian!!walkingthedog said:I don't see how you can end a sentence with 'and'. walkingthedog
I expect you Geordie's had to have special English lessons. They probably included such things as the use of 'and' so you didn't get too confused.

Brightstar
The biggest problem is using a word in it's wrong context, which will not be found by a spell checker. Jacob seems to frequently make this mistake. An Example:There are two cows in that field. Their udders are full of milk.
bocaj
My Year 2,3 and 4 teacher told us never to start a sentence with And or But. I have also found it while reading books and our High School Teachers let us start sentences with and. Not sure about But though.Jacob

Please keep WTD and Poliss in order for me!Administrator said:Hi all,The problem with a "preview" feature is that if you didn't read your message before you hit "post", why should you read it after hitting "preview" instead? Write your message, read it, post it!I will pass the idea to the developers, but as with having an "edit" feature, it really isn't very likely to happen.Have a great evening and weekend everyone.-FA.
