Probably not, but whilst you wait for a reply from someone more knowledgable, perhaps you would spend a few minutes reviewing the TIPs in the TIP page link below:

When production was in the UK, the instruction leaflet which accompanied the item was usually dated.

Other than that, the style of box - Tri-ang, Tri-ang Hornby, Hornby Railways - could give an approximate date if the production run(s) spanned two 'eras', for example.

Kinda...

If your box is lucky enough to have a 'Scale drawing' on the back - that WILL be dated - mine is taken from my 'Fowler Class 4P 4MT BR  2-6-4 No. 42334' R3404...(Bottom right of Photo...)

As stated there is usually a sticky label here in the picture

To a large degree, yes.  Boxes have changed significantly over the years, but quite easy to discern eras from just looking at the box, at least if you are knowledgeable.

Pat Hammond's excellent books clearly show box designs associated with era.  The Hornby Collectors Guide web-site in Australia also helps.

Any model after 1998 is very easily dated simply by the 4-digit, or recently introduced 5-digit Rxxxx catalogue numbers.

Thank you all so far.

Anglia988, thnumber is R2169 - Clan Line.

This was produced in 2000 with the running number 35028.

Apparently, there were runs from then until 2010 And there seem to be a number of different boxes used.

If they all have the same catalogue and running number does this mean the detail is the same?

'Clan Line' as a loco has been produced a number of times but just the once as R2169, available between 2000 and 2002 (with an improved smokebox door introduced during that run).  Subsequently it has been incorporated in to the Venice-Simplon-Orient Express sets but these carried R1xxx set numbers,

Whilst the basic livery could not change, the loco perhaps carried different detailing such as overhead electrification warnings depending upon the period being depicted.

And later this year it returns as an individual loco once again as part of the Centenary releases with gold-plated metalwork, as R3824 with a replica of the R2169 box.

All Hornby "R" references after R.1000, refer to a single product.

R.1000 itself was a GWR Mixed Traffic set, introduced in 1997.

Do you have the R number? if so then I can help you.

This loco was purchased by me in 1977 - it has a three digit "R" number -  R154 SR 4-6-0 Class N15 – Sir Dinadan – 795  - Cost £12.75

Some models of Clan Line were also DCC Ready and DCC Fitted.

Clan Line can only ever have one running number - 35028 - unless it has been dressed up to appear as another M/N Class - which it has done on occasions.

Having done a little more investagative work, I may be able to throw a bit more light with regards the original question.

I have just been through the stock cupboard and dug out R2583 Class N15 30453 King Arthur. This model came in the normal red window box, with a slip cover depicting a picture of the loco. On the side of the slip cover there is a small white panel - not a sticker - on which it says " SK101 - 86034 - R2583 - 11-07". Now I recall reading the letters indicate the factory in which the model was made, 11-07 could be November 2007? I bought the model in late 2007/early 2008. It is one of the very few loco's I have not got the original sale receipt.

R2169 appears in the Hornby Catalogue for 2000, 2001 and 2002.

The next appearance of Clan Line is in 2006, when, along with three Pullman Cars it was part of a special edition for the Save the Children Fund.

35028 was used in 2007 as part of a premier set (R.1073) and again in 2012 in set R.1162.

Clan Line has since appeared in unrebuilt form with the early BR logo as R.3436 (2016)

I think it was just a coincidence that I picked an old (ish) loco when I checked the box which showed 11/07 - I have looked at other boxes, and there are similar groups of figures - but nothing looking like dates at all. So personally, I don't think the box gives the date. I stand to be corrected.

Hi all

in theory you can use the box to help date an item in reality not so sure

I have purchased a number of second hand Items over the years and second hand no guarantee the item is in its original box doesn't bother me but it does some people.

regards John
