Ballast

Hi all,

I ordered a roll of ballast foam last night after viewing on Youtube, what are your thoughts on the foam?  I'd previously purchasted ballast stones, glue etc but was worried about ballasting around points.  The ballast foam looks great, no mess & assists with sound on layout board.

Any pitfalls to lookout for?  Any pics with foam employed on your layout?  Should I glue foam to board rather than pin?

Any thoughts would be welcome!

SK50,

Have you tried the Search facility, there are lots of threads on ballast including comments on foam ballast. If I recall correctly the general consensus is that it is not thought highly of because it can degrade quite quickly, perhaps you should have asked before buying some?

Ballast on points is not a problem at all, but you have to be careful and take it slowly. I did all of my points after I had ballasted the rest of the track. In some instances I worked between one sleeper at a time, making sure no ballast or pva went where it should not. Do not use foam underlay - it rots eventually. Lots of Youtube videos on ballasting - watch until your perfectly happy with what you are going to do.

Thanks,

Foam on the way, I'll employ it & see how I get on. It looks good, other model train friends have said it is good & Hornby selling I notice.

I had purchased ballast, glue etc but have read elsewhere on forums that base board has warped - another reason for foam.

I used two types on my layout. On the main track the gauge master pre ballasted and plain foam in the tunnel. It's been down 3vyesrs with no problems. One advantage if you wish to change track layout it's not glued down at the points you buy foam slabs which you apply ballast to. No problems points work fine. Photo is pre-ballasted and points. /media/tinymce_upload/9a916d9dcd1e7269eb979a2059f30674.jpg
