Dummy car Bogie weight.

Puffed Out

Recommended Posts

Hornby R2336. Mainline Co-Co. Electric Class 58, Weathered Edition. (58002 Dawmill colliery, 58005 Iron bridge).

The Loco and what is essentially a dummy car.  The 2 of them almost have the same weight as each other, the Dummy has what is 2 motor carriers/gears in the bogie frames.

Would the Dummy 'weights' have a beneficial by reducing the weight of the motor/gear carriers. I would think a reduction of approx. 50%.would be possible.

Or is there a direct fit alternative bogie and wheel set that can be used in the place of the original to reduce the weight.  Similar to a class 47.

I suppose it depends where you would be placing the 'Dummy' 58.

If at the back of a reasonable-length train, then the lighter the better.

If double-heading and you're pushing it, having a little weight keeps a good stability on the curves.

Your call.

Sorry, can't help wrt direct deplacement lightweight bogies.

I think you're right. I was thinking it was a Hornby cost saving measure, by getting rid of old stock.

It runs smooth enough.  Add to that, if I wanted to change to something like the class 47's, it just wouldn't be an economical outlay.

I'll leave it alone.  Thanks for the input @atom3624. 😀
