I am a newbie here, got into this by getting for christmas the "country rambler " set, and gradually added to my set and length, started to buy on ebay good quality trains like dmu with internal lighting but just doesnt work and trips  the power  I am going to have to stick to 0-4-0  light engines as also bought 08 shunter and again trips the power

The Country Rambler set has a cheap R8250 controller that trips just by looking at it [it lacks power]. The set controller is not meant as a serious adults layout controller, it is just a basic controller to get a child going when the set is opened by a child on their birthday / christmas.

.

If you want to power more current hungry trains with lighting etc, you need to invest in a more expensive capable (serious) controller.

The "tripping" of the power is usually caused by a thermal fuse or switch inside of the controller, or the transformer that plugs into the wall. If power hungry locomotives are used, then the fuse will heat up eventually, and cut the power.

The controller mentioned above by @Chrisaff can also cut the power for a few minutes after a short-circuit - are you sure your locomotives / rolling stock are not short circuiting across the rails?
