Discostu Posted June 24, 2020 Posted June 24, 2020 Hi All,As a ten year old I had a keen interest in the Battle of Britain and remember watching the 1957 movie "The One That Got Away". I was always intrigued by the story of Franz von Werra, so when Airfix announced a re release of their excellent 1/48 109E featuring the markings of his plane, I just had to build it. It's a great kit and I enjoyed making it, so here it is, airbrushed in Humbrol enamels with a light panel wash in dark gray and exhaust staining courtesy of the soot from the tailpipe of my daughters car. It's also the first 109 I've completed without making a stuff up of it!Cheers, Stuart. /media/tinymce_upload/38dbb7f21a51308fd589e0053f44313a.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/1fda4428bf5464890d366cf822b354df.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/4da7cf167fe5489bd9c3ac3c50d7801f.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/d0ea1ed9ddeffd7591cf6b7bfe62f3cf.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/6da523733ec1d7544106d78249c988f9.jpg
Peter s Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Nice job. A couple of months ago I did my first 109 which didn't make me wince too so I know the feeling of success! Its harder than it seems getting the colours just right. An off shade of "grau" is all it takes to make a duff job... and thats before you try and do fuselage mottling.
James_N88 Posted July 1, 2020 Posted July 1, 2020 Excellet build. I'm tempted to do a 109 but as Peter says, the fuselage mottling has me running away from the idea!
T2B Posted July 1, 2020 Posted July 1, 2020 Mottling masks can be had on the Internet for only a few quid if you wanted to go that way?!
Dark Earth Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Wow Stu - what nice crisp paint work ! And the light weathering is nicely done.Chris
Peter s Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Mottling masks can be had on the Internet for only a few quid if you wanted to go that way?! I recently found some in 1/72 from Hannants. They DO make life easier but you still need a light touch with a very clean airbrush. I previously used cotton buds (almost a dry brush method) to apply the mottle and usually got a decent finish.
T2B Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Yes Peter s I would image a mask would make mottling a little easier to obtain a randon pattern, but a degree of skill or patience would still be needed with an airbrush. I used to use just a dry flat trimmed brush and managed OK, and my recent attempts with feathering the trigger on my airbrush haven't been too bad?
