Hornby Points - Old & New?

I have a vast mix of Hornby set track, lots of newer nickel stuff and a big box of older steel track that's probably no good to anyone!

The same is true of my point, all Hornby. This means I have both 'styles' of point mechanism, the newer sliding bar and the older rotational lever.

Will I need two different types of point motor for these? The modern ones that can be surface mounted with a little plastic hut and the older little black slabs that sit parallel to the points?

There are three types of Hornby System 6 code 100 points.

The original has a rectangular box on the side, with a sliding actuator in a slot on the outside.

This takes the same point motor as Super 4 points, which clips onto the side of the point.

Now no longer made, but can be found 'used' and 'new old stock'.

Originally X.404.

The Points Remote Control Pack R.633. contains the point motor, RT.44, later R.044, and wiring.

Later, the System 6 points were changed, and a new operating lever, of the same pattern as the Super 4 points, but in plastic, was used.

These also take the Super track type, X.404 point motors.

The most recent Hornby points do not have a separate operating lever, instead they have projections on the ends of the tie bar, to operate the point. (PECO style)

These points use a newer type of point motor, similar to the PECO point motors.

R8014

There is also a 'Surface Mounted' point motor.

I can now confirm that at some point, the Tri-ang X.404 motor (solenoid) was also sold as R.664.

Another number to look up!

Also possibly of interest, for a time Hornby Railways Single arm semaphore signals came with a plastic base plate that takes one of these motors, to make the signal remote control.

The signals in question have a longer operating lever, with a small hole in the bottom that the operating linkage of the motor fits into.
