Old Decals

Like many during this period, I've got back into modelling. The models I'm working on have all been in the stash for 20-30 years and have run into a decal proble. Whilst the decals appear intact, the covering paper (intended to stop the decal sheet sticking to something) is stuck to the decal sheet itself! Can anyone provide any advice on how to remove this paper without damaging the decals themselves?

Usually this will detach itself after immersion in water, although it's not guaranteed. To remove the paper without immersion you'll need some isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Peel the sheet back until you reach a sticky point and very gently work in some IPA on a swab. It should release from the decal, but you need to be careful because the inks could be fragile. If possible start on a part of the sheet that's not going to be used to see how it goes.

You're welcome. One thing I should have mentioned, with old sheets that have visibly deteriorated, for instance hairline cracks in the ink, or a very dry and rough appearance, it's worth attempting to stabilise the sheet. Hairline cracking will almost certainly result in the subjects breaking up after being immersed in water. I would use Klear or more recent Klear derivatives to try and do this, better still if you can get it is Microscale Liquid Decal Film. It won't guarantee a rescue of an old sheet, but it gives you a fighting chance.
