Railway in a shed

Reddington

Recommended Posts

Good Afternoon Everyone

My new 10 by 6 shed arrives next month and of course it will be insulated and electric sockets and lighting will be added and security measures will be taken. Cctv and the best locks and shutters I can buy.

My question is I was going to have 2 large workbenches at different heights to build my layout on. However thinking about it should I have benches all the way round and operate the trains in the middle of the shed. But how can I run my railway past the door I need to get in and out, I cant crawl under with my health issues any ideas?

cheers Red

Hi

As most (if not all?) shed doors open outwards, your task is made much simpler!  For an around the walls layout either build a lifting bridge section (Bar flap style) or a 'push out/pull back into place' style removable section.  IMO the lifting bridge is simpler, but make sure the two hinges used to allow the bridge/flap to lift are mounted above the baseboard top by at least the height of the rail tops plus a tad more.  e.g. If baseboard to rail top is 4mm then mount the hinges on blocks 5mm thick.

My web sites here gives the basic idea... https://www.brian-lambert.co.uk/Hints_&__Tips.html#Bookmark3

Could you use a "bar style" lift up layout piece on hinges, so that when exit / entry is needed, it just lifts up and pivots, and then can be lowered again when you are running locomotives and trains?

You might have to do some testing on how to fix the track to the non-hingeing track pieces to the other track pieces at either side.

Or a lift-out pieces that attaches with gate latch style bolts?

I use a slide out section for access.

There are connectors at the back which provide power to the section when its in but also isolate a section either side of the gap for safety purposes when the slide out is removed.

I used a slide out as a lifting flap would have been too complex.

Thank you for all the reply’s much appreciated

its a 10ft by 6ft appex shed with a outward opening door that will be in the centre.

RAF 96 That looks brilliant do you mind me asking how your connectors work and isolation section work.

Thank you for the ideas and suggestions but a bar flap might be to much for my limited skills.

cheers Red.
