Borgy
Hello everyoneI have a Hornby R2099C LMS 2P 4-4-0 '644' I' the current drive wheels on the tender are plastic and the tyres keep slipping off. Even new tyres. So I would like to swap them for metal wheels without tyres. Another problem is the gear is molded to one side of each pair. Anyone know of a working repayment ? Thanks Borgy. Going Spare
Not an easy fix. It is possible that Hornby metal wheels could be substituted but it will, I fear, be pure coincidence that they are suitable (for axle diameter, wheel-back gear diameter and number of teeth, etc.) but metal Hornby wheel tyres may just fit the ex-Dapol plastic wheel centres - trial & error will be the only way of finding out. Alternatively, it may be possible to substitute a complete Hornby Patriot tender chassis (or a complete Hornby Patriot tender if the existing body will not fit the replacement chassis) but the drawbar will probably need to be modified or replaced and the motor will have to be wired through from the loco if the Hornby electrical drawbar can't be used. All in all, try to find out why the traction tyres are slipping and cure that problem: it shouldn't happen, and will be a far easier solution! Borgy
ThanksI think is just the plastic wheelsI have cleanwe thetrack and cleand the wheels before repacing the new tyres, even on a test oval 2nd Radius curve after an 1hr or so a tyre has come off. The wheel diameter is 15mm and the shaft is 2mm. I've not checked the gear size and tooth count. Worst case scenario I could buy the spoked wheels without the gear and cut off the gears off the originals.
The son of Triangman
Before you do any drastic surgery, I would be wanting to find out why the tyres are coming off. Are the new tyres you bought old stock in which case they may be decayed, are they the right tyres for the model? Is there grease on the tyre grooves? Are the tender wheels in gauge, check the back to back measurement. Are the wheels worn, plastic can shrink with age, so new replacement wheels of the same sort may cure the issue. 96RAF
Some diesels/electrics have dummy bogey wheels with solid tyres and moulded on gears. E.g. Class 90 SS146/209. These obviously are not spoked and you would need to check the diameter, but a possible way to go to overcome the traction tyre problem. I have used them to replace traction tyres on ringfield bogies.
