Hornby 0-4-0's: Variations in Motors

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have recently been trying to find the name of a motor in one of my Hornby 0-4-0's, but it looks a little different to some of the newer motors in that Hornby have in their newer models.

I understand that this is a can motor that is in the newer 0-4-0's :

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hornby.com%2Fuk-en%2F0-4-0_motor_assembly.html&psig=AOvVaw05LBO_hU4e9uHx-qCRpnnl&ust=1593531820867000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCLDW_-Sup-oCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD

And this is the motor that is in a Hornby GWR Class 101 that I own:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/224031204789?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=224031204789&targetid=908661474856&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9046343&poi=&campaignid=10204071591&mkgroupid=104953044434&rlsatarget=aud-629407027585:pla-908661474856&abcId=1145987&merchantid=6995734&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoub3BRC6ARIsABGhnyaixmD8k0OYNmKNyfwnPl3_oKPnDZy0HuYin5G2GLzTs4Cpvd8ywHwaApPREALw_wcB

The Hornby Can Motor is easy to find, as it is directly available to order from Hornby's own website, for a very reasonable price.

But the motor in the second link is much harder to find  - and I would rather replace the motor than replace the whole locomotive. Does anyone know where I can get a reliable source of the (what I am guessing is older style) motor shown in the second link? Or is eBay my only chance of getting a motor?

Or, is the motor shown in the second link interchangeable for the can motor shown in the first?

Thanks in advance for your replies,

14xx Tank

That grubby S/H motor looks like an old Monogram slot car motor with replaceable brushes, not a loco motor, nor hs it got the worm drive.

I would go for a New Modellers Shop new one. I just wish hOrnby would better define the motor and gear train from the newer much more tame 0-4-0s.

No, the GWR Class 101 I have is plastic body only, although I do have one of the 0F Pug Saddle Tanks with the metal chassis. Thanks for the info.

The motors do look very similar when googled, and when looking at the service sheets.

Are they quite rare nowadays? I've seen one on eBay, and it was £12 - £13! Suppose I'll have to wait until someone sells one for a lower price.

Check service sheet 115 - if that is yours, you can substitute the later (current style) can motor as per sheet 115A by changing the metal carrier as well and adding the spacer.  The open can motors are around 30 - 40 years old so yes, good ones are rare.

Thank you for all your replies. I will have a look around and see if the parts you suggested are available - I might just try purchasing the open can motor, when someone sells one for a lower price. If this is not possible, I will buy the newer can motor and metal cradle, and the spacer, and convert it over so it runs on the newer can motors.

Thanks very much all,
