Kevin Hodges
Has anyone tried fine cat litter as coal ? I wondering if I could add, pour it to my empty coal wagons, then spray it with 50/50 PVA and water to lock it in ? Then paint it black of course. What do you guys think ? Kev. Chrissaf
I'm not a cat owner, but wouldn't adding any moisture to cat litter in the form of 'water/PVA' make the cat litter swell up as part of absorbing the moisture process..Also, not sure what cat litter is actually made from, but if there is any organic components in it, I would expect it to rot overtime, particularly once dampened..Most modellers actually crush up real coal and glue a thin layer over the top of some light weight filling like polystyrene or foam blocks.. Kevin Hodges
Hi Chris, The litter I use (cat owner) is like course sand. It doesn't swell, but 'clumps'. I know some of the folk who do wargaming scenery sometimes use it for dioramas and basing. Hadn't thought about crushing up real coal.
EnGee
I used cat litter for track ballasting. I tried a small bit and I have to say the results were rather good. Next time the mrs brought home some more, I nicked a bit of it when the cat wan't looking - then disaster! Not being a connoisseur of cat litter i didn't realize there are 2 types, clumping and non clumping!!Do not use the clumping version, you will end up with a very messy solid lump as soon as you apply any moisture! Non clumping will probably be OK , but try a small bit first.
ellocoloco
Won't you be encouraging the cat to fill up the wagons with even more load.............
