Adam_R
Hello all. Looking for some suggestions as to why my rebuilt West Country pacific is derailing around curves in one direction only please. When travelling around curves to the left it seems absolutely fine, but when it's going around curves to the right the front driving wheel seems to lift off of the track and mount itself outside, eventually leading to a derailment. The front bogie stays railed, so I know it's not that. Almost like maybe it's weight Isn't distributed correctly, but I'm unsure how that's possible. Any help would be much appreciated. I'll attach a photo also. thanks all Adam

Modelnut19
That is strange. I have a modern S15 which lifts the front bogie going one way and causes a derailment and yet it runs fine going the other way. I wonder if the valve gear is doing something strange? Be careful as the valve gear is rather fragile, especially on these.Have you had the model since it was new?
Chrissaf
I would be looking at the sideways play in the suspect wheel axle, it might be biased (sprung) towards one side. Such that it has a tendancy to favour the side that derails.
ColinB
Yes, the valve gear is not available as a spare part, also beware of the speedo drive if you take the body off, you need to remove the link to the valve gear before you separate the body from the chassis. The other thing is, is it a new one with fixed pony truck or the old one with moveable pony truck. I watched my Britannia lift its front bogie going over a piece of uneven track, it sort of pivoted on the front two large wheels, could it be that the track is not absolutely flat. Modelnut19
Some people might be interested to know that I tried my S15 again tonight after a long while. I had resigned myself to it only running clockwise without derailing and yet, praise be, it now runs fine. While the track is fixed down, I assume somethign was slightly out of alignment on the track at the point where the loco's front bogie kept derailing when running anti-clockwise. Hurray! Bulleidboy
Sometimes if you have fitted all of the front buffer "pipework/couplings" they can foul the bogie. I had this probem on a Hornby Merchant Navy.
atom3624
Is the front bogie the design with the mounting plate and lateral slot which permits the bogie to slide side-to-side?If so, how easily does it slide? Does it catch? Al.
