The Hornby Patriots - Anyone knows alist of them?

PatriotClass

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,

Hope you all doing as well as possible in these times!

As you can see my nickname, my favourite loco is the Patriot Class. Now Hornby has built a big variety of this class through the years, so I would like to be sure to have them all in my collection.

Has anybody of you pros got a list of them? And do you have information about, which of them was tender-driven and which had the motor inside the loco?.

That would help me a lot

Thanks

Chris

According to Pat Hammond's catalogue, Hornby have produced tender-drive Patriots 5514, 5533, 5539, 5541, 45515 (green), 45519 (black), 45537 and 45543 (both green); loco-drive Patriots 5532 and 45539 (green), plus loco-drive rebuilt Patriots 45512, 45528, 45531, 45535, 45536 and 45545 (all green).

Buyer beware!!

The metal generally used for chassis manufacture, and the moulded metal weights is an alloy called MAZAK.

Several rebuilt Patriots were apparently known to have suffered from MAZAK rot, where a poorer quality batch of the alloy reacted in moist environments, including in UK, and expanded, warped and simpled 'crumbled to dust'.

If any take your fancy, look closely.

I think the chassis has always been OK, it's just the retaining moulding holding the motor / gears in place, for this Patiot.

I've previously had Private W Wood VC which some had said had suffered, but mine was perfect ... so it's possibly poor 'ingots' when going to melt down prior to moulding / casting at the factory.

As it's an older locomotive, some say if it's still OK now, then it's probably going to remain that way.

Al.
