What to do with an empty corner

Progress on Parkvale has been quite rapid during lockdown. I started work on the back corner board laying the road surface by the main station and adding the two shops, platform and signal box to the board. That left an area in the corner, what to put in there. I had thought of a high hill with a road tunnel but thought let's have something new and a bit simpler so I built a round-a-bout in a cutting. Bottom left corner in picture

Hi Will Hay. Glad it gave you inspiration. Have added trees to top of cutting cliffs. Adds height to scene.

Ignore the other boards as the one I am working on is not in its its  position and us also back to front to give better access.

Not in position! I was wondering how you were going to go through the blue wall!   😛

A bit of straight track after the hinged flap might be less prone to derailments. Trying to get track to stay in line on a curved lift-up is always problematic. I appreciate that is only a sketch!

You could add muddy wheel marks across the centre of that roundabout, to show where a boy racer failed to make the turn!

Just out of interest, what period are you modelling as this will effect the type of signs that you would need (or not need) to finish the roundabout off. If you like I could make some suggestions.

You could also do with some splitter islands on each approach but these could be acheived using hatched road markings. If using these be very careful to observe the real thing because there is a right and a wrong way round!

As to my empty corners, I have small loco sheds in each, one is the Airfix/Dapol one for the Colliery branch while the other is for the narrow gauge slate quarry.

Perhaps a sign and flowers or bushes on the roundabout  "Sponsored by Great Western Railways"   -or others--. Or is that too recent an idea.

I love the way the French theme and decorate their roundabouts andhow each village has different but very ornamental street lighting. Something we should copy over here instead of the ‘plain white bread’ we always get.

Cyprus decorates their roundabouts but only at Easter, Xmas and during the elections when the politicians are mocked by their cartoon likeness caricatures on display.

UK is a stuffy place to live. Apologies for temporarily highjacking this very interesting thread.

The era is late steam. The region is where Western meets southern and LNER get in there too. It could be a heritage line too.

So apart from laying the roundabout approach road dividers islands and white lines it is just about finished. Turned it round the right way but it's still out of position. Street lights installed, and roundabout lit. Building lights and platform lights. These need to all be tuned just all run of same 2.6v supply for testing to night.

Well this board is basically finished. Just needs white lines added to road, some people and animals but they will be added later. Today was front edge road, lay-by with grass divide, and trees and fencing. The refreshment van dates from the late 50s, Matchbox.

Pines bent a bit.
