JsionyRN
Good afternoonI am trying to locate a TTS sound decoder for the hornby class 29. could anyone tell me if it is possible to purchase the above.Or alternatively could anyone suggest a suitable alternative outside of the more expensive sound decoders Regards Roger RN
Ruffnut Thorston
As far as I know, no dedicated Hornby TTS decoder has been released for the Class 29. This is an older Hornby model, which hasn't been made for some time I believe. There may be a Diesel TTS decoder for a different class that may have close sounds? JsionyRN
Good MorningThank you very much for taking the time to reply I will check with Hornby to see if they can advise on a suitable TTS decoderKind regards Roger
96RAF
The usual way to choose an alternative sound set is to find out what engine the Class 29 has and if any other diesels use that or a similar power plant. Some such as Class 37 and Class 43 have had engine swaps as part of refurbishment and these sound different pre/post refurb. The next step is horns as some are distinctive to class such as Class 47, then any peculiarities a certain diesel may have to makes it stick out, like the Class 40 turbo whistle or the Hoover fans.Or like me just stick anything in there for now as long as it makes a noise, until something better comes along. LCDR
I don't know if this helps but the class 29 used a MAN 12 cylinder L12V18/21S rated 1,100 hp at 1,500 hp.which was also used in the diesel hydraulic class 22. This wasn't a particularly common power unit, only the NBL D600 and D833 "Warship" classes also had MAN power plant, but in these two engies were fitted..These engines were not very successful. AndyMac1707817969
(Not wishing to be too negative here) Hornby make no other loco, nor to the best of my knowledge have plans to make any loco that had a similar MAN engine these had before they were rebuilt with a Paxman Ventura engine. Hornby will not do a TTS decoder for a loco long since out of production and not even DCC ready. They only do TTS decoders for locos that they sell with a TTS option. As I am sure you area aware Dapol currently do a sound enabled Class 29. I assume to mention this is within the rules of this forum as I am not promoting a competitor as Hornby do not make a Class 29 so this does not compete with anything Hornby currently produce. Even if you were to find one how do you intend on fitting it to the Hornby Class 29, is the Hornby TTS decoder even cable of handling the old motor in these 29s which you will have to hard-wire it into. Might end up frying it fairly easily.
Going Spare
As the 29 is Ringfield-powered, fitting a decoder should not be too difficult. If the Ventura engine was similar to those in HSTs, a sound-alike TTS or other sound decoder may well be suitable.
LCDR
Although I saw these way back in the 1960s, I cannot remember what they sounded like, and I would be surprised if anyone else can. There may be some old film of them but I cannot recall ever watching any. You may need to cast your net wider, and try the larger forums like RM web. 81F
@Siony Hi Roger, funnily enough I have just hard wired an ordinary decoder to a class 29 this afternoon so it can be done. However it is not as simple as it might look and I managed to fry a chip before I realised the problem. On mine both carbon brush covers were connected by wires oneto the non-powered bogie while the other (nearest the end) was connected back to the power bogie via a short wire. Good I thought just unplug both the wires and insert a secoder with the appropriate tage - but how wrong was I! Sadly this teminal also has a direct contact to the chassis. As a result I fried a chip! To illustrate what I mean, please see this video clip on how to convert an original Hornby HST which appears to have the same type of motor bogie. . However, rather than bending the tag away from the contact I inserted a small piece of electricians tape between the contact and the tag Isticky side onto the tag. I then soldered the grey and orange wires to the appropriate carbon brush covers and used tags similar to the the originals to connect the black and red wires (one to each bogie. The chip I used was a cheap Liasdcc decoder (sorry I cannot remember the model number rather than anything heavy duty. I have had it running in today on half power for around half an hour without too much problems but it is a bit seems to require a bit more power to start off and can shoot away if you are too heavy handed on the controler. Unfortunately I cannot find any videos of class 29 locos with sound but NBL did build locos for export so wonder if there may be a video og someting with a similar engine out there on Youtube other than a similar power unit being started up in a container at ! . AndyMac1707817969
On reflection surely the correct engine sound for a class 29 should be a Paxman Ventura. The class 21s had the MAN engine before they were re-engined and became class 29s. Class 14 had the same Paxman Ventura engine but I think that was a 6 cylinder not a 12 cylinder.
