Paint for Hornby Stephensons Rocket 3.5”

Colroy

Recommended Posts

Hi

Thank you all for your input very helpful.

The tender does not get hot so does not require special paint

I have ordered paint from bestcoldiy ( will see how it is when it arrives)

I have tried halfords and other car shops but nothing comes close

I am going to jawel paints tomorrow to see if they can mix the colour for me as spray can.

I will let you all know how it goes.

Thank you all for your comments, much appreciate.

ps

@atom3624 what code yellow?

Before anyone produced any paint with reference to the colour of Stephenson's Rocket I found Yellow Ochre the closest match. This is quite common and can be picked up anywhere cheaply. I thought it was perfect when I made a plastic kit model a while ago. Just be aware there may be slight variants. The model paint producers "Vallejo" make this, although this was not the make I used then, so cannot guarantee results or a perfect match. Paint matching is one of those black arts!

All old colours but car makers re use colours under different names and many makes actually have the same colour. I know Vauxhall, Ford, Land Rover and Jaguar recently used Tahiti Blue from MG Rover and called it all sorts of new names. Try Daytona Yellow

Above is an attempt to put Vespa's list into some form of readable presentation.

Chrissaf, it was in a list like that, which you have redone, when I copied and pasted from my files. So yet another anomoly of this very tired and badly put together website. By the way I now start reading from the top posts, rather than the bottom posts, without logging in.

Vespa, personally I would be cautious using Daytona Yellow as this is a vibrant, bright yellow. I think a dull, earthy yellow would possibly be more appropriate taken from common knowledge. I think some people do see it as being bright and if this is your taste then of course this would be fine.

Since the colour is only based on a replica and not the real thing, and as there were no colour photographs at the time, then the whole subject is a matter for debate and conjecture.

Colroy if you simply want to make sure the tender is the same as the locomotive then you could take a colour match. Homebase and B&Q do it from a sample, and can supply paint, I think they even supply a tester to take away!

Chrissaf, I re read my post and it seems a bit curt, so apologies and thanks to you for taking the time to relist. I was in a bit of a hurry and saw it listed as I hadn't expected. It really is time Hornby packed in with this website format and used a ready made one that still has moderators. Most car websites use the same format which works far better than this website.

Yes it did seem a tad curt, but I put that down to general frustration with the website.

.

Yes ... I too wish the Hornby forum software was a little less custom and a little more commercial in features and functionality. Behind the scenes the ComMods are trying our very best to get this current forum link / image BUG fixed. But 'brick wall' and 'head' or 'blood' and 'stone' come to mind.

Here is a picture of the plastic kit I made up a while ago. This was done with Yellow Ochre from a child’s painting kit. All done by brush. The model looks great with the naked eye but the camera lens makes me look like a true amateur.

Unfortunately you’ll just have to wait to see my handy work due to “ bugs in the system”.

@vespa

... to get the ordered list you typed in and see in draft to become the ordered list Chris put up what you have to do is double click carriage return between lines. This looks like its putting a huge gap in but the forum software strips one of them out again so it all gets bundled up.

Crazy that WYSI... not ...WYG

Hi All

Thank you all for your replies.

update on paint: I went to Jawel paints in Tamworth and left the tender with them, they managed to mix me the paint (in an aerosol) and it's an exact match (very pleased). It cost £10 (bargain). I've respirated the tender and it looks brand new. All I need to do now is find a way of painting the fine black lines that are on the tender (proving to be a bit of a problem).

if anyone is interested I will give you the code for the paint or let me know and I will get some mixed up and post it to you.

.

That option won't be valid on this forum as there is no 'Private Messaging' function on this forum and there is a specific 'No transaction' forum rule.

I tried using gel acrylic pens for lining but getting a clean start and stop was next to impossible. My preferred method now is to buy stick on strips which you can get in various widths and colours at most art and craft shops. I found mine in The Range. What I wanted was the old rub down transfer sheets but Letraset seems to have disappeared.

Maybe it would be possible to mask off a straight edge using a piece of plastic and something like Humbrol Maskol. Painting the Maskol up to it each side. Then when dry just brush paint in between. Or perhaps use modellers precision masking tape. Just make sure your original paint is completelay dry and hard first If you try this solution.

@TrainDriverJohn, Thank you but looks far to complicated for me to attempt (I'm not that good)

@Vespa, looks just what I'm looking for. I have emailed Jim and wait his reply.

Thank you Guys

I think ringing Jim at Modelmaster will be quicker as it is only himself and wife Elspeth that do all the packing and picking and emails take up a lot of time and sometimes he can take a while to reply. That can make people think he doesn't care or can't be bothered when he actually does try his best to help. There are literally thousands of items in his stock so even a small order can take quite some time to pick and pack, making emails second place.
