Andy Evans
Hi folks, looking for some advice please on this 1/72 Mustang./media/tinymce_upload/90a973ddfadec950dfcaa591778aa396.jpgIs there any way of minimising the refraction through a clear canopy part? Seem to remember reading somewhere that paining the mating edge cuts down on this but has anyone tried this or are there any other tricks? Many thanks
Aad Gadgie
I'm not sure much - if anything - can be done about this. The refraction/distortion is caused by light being bent by the shape of the canopy and variations in its internal structure, as the light passes through. Clear moulded styrene is fairly thick, which is a large part of the problem, since there is a lot (relatively) of internal structure in which to have these variations. You could try sourcing thinner aftermarket items (mostly vac-formed, I think) if it annoys you. If anyone else has a trick for this, please share it.Nice-looking Mustang, by the way 😀
peebeep
^^^ What Aad Gadgie says. Thickness and irregularity in the moulding itself.
Andy Evans
Thanks for the input chaps. I know there is little I can do about the thickness of the parts, it was more about hiding the edge if possible. (you can see this where the curved glazing meets the IP coaming).Friend of mine suggested I paint the edges black and then use black milliput to blend any gaps, I'm going to try this on the next one to see if it helps any.Just have to paint the propellor and do some weathering on this now, I'll post up some pictures when I'm done.Cheers. peebeep
Aah, can see what you mean now, yes, paint the edges. What you can see is where the transprarency isn't actually bonding to the fuselage. If you paint the edge of the transparency you will see whatever colour the paint is.

Aad Gadgie
Ah, yes, I see what you mean now, my apologies 😬 - I hope your experiment works, and I look forward to seeing more pics - still a nice Mustang!
Andy Evans
No problem, difficult one to describe. Thanks for the advice. This is where I am up to at the moment with the Mustang, not much more to do now to finish it./media/tinymce_upload/83837b2e0bda72098e1d944a51181abc.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/bafab7e28b3e6c1b5cbff38f72672e40.jpg
