Mallard with DCC not working on DC track

Hi, this is my first post and I'm essentially a complete newbie, as I last had a train set in 1984!
we've just bought my son the DCC fitted Mallard R3395TTS for Christmas, new and direct from Hornby. He got the Western Messenger train set for his birthday and we are attempting to run it on that track (basic oval, DC). All other locos are running fine, (including a Lima diesel from my old set!), but the Mallard just sits there, making a quiet hum, from the tender and the loco. My understanding is that DCC stuff should work by default on analogue track, but I've read about CV 29 being set to prevent DC runaway. Would the engine have shipped in this mode? The volume and pitch of the hum are constant, regardless of the amount of power from the controller.

Any other suggestions? I've not tried the 9V battery direct to the wheels test, as all the other locos are working. I'm not particularly adept at technical work, so will send back to Hornby if there's a fault, so I'm just checking that I'm not missing anything first.

Many thanks in anticipation!

This is an almost identical question to one asked earlier today by another 1st time poster.

@Johnnytreebeard

See the answer given earlier today in this other thread.

Hornby TTS locos are indeed shipped with 'DC Operation' disabled at the factory in CV29. See the thread answer linked above for more information.
