It could need a service and oil. Take it to a model shop and see if they can help. The older ring field motors are not as quiet as the modern motors.

If the r number is correct it’s not a Ringfield motor.

Can it be upgraded, that would boil down to how skilled you are as a modeller, though your basic question points to a beginner in the hobby. Don’t worry even the best modellers had to start at the beginning.

So how deep are your pockets for some one else to do it. And would they want to is another thing altogether.

I would start with a good overall it’s the cheapest option and very like resolve the noise problem anyway.

R2319 is indeed a 5-pole ring-field tender drive loco with good pickups. See service sheet 255.

If converting - see link below, make sure you get a slimline motor as the standard width motors will foul the centre wheels. Also note that some motors are not 12v and require diode packs to protect them by dropping the applied voltage.

Service Sheet 255B is the correct one for this model. It is a ringfield motor. There are many videos on YouTube showing the servicing of this motor type, 00Neal is quite informative. Spare springs and bushes are available, l use an Ebay seller in Bristol.

It is a very nice loco, mine is in a display case, doesn't fit in with my era of modelling, but it is my team, so had to get it when I saw it.
