Hi

im not sure I posted this article correctly so re posting.

When looking for Flying Scotsman R078 twin funnel running number 60103 I found that there is also King vIII with the same number. Also Scotsman R078 appears to be difficult to source.

Hornby  Ref: R078 has been used for both locos at different times. I expect the Scotsman is difficult to source as it was produced 24 years ago. You will have to look on Ebay or other s/h outlets.

R.3443, R3991, R3627, R850 are all Flying Scotsman running as 60103. I have not looked to see availability or type of chimney.

I think FS has been produced in every conceivable configuration it ever ran in and carrying every variant number.

Hornby uses R-numbers to identify individual products. 'Flying Scotsman' has been released, as 96RAF says, in virtually every conceivable combination of livery and prototype and model specification possible but a different R-number would have been allocated to each model released. The R-number therefore does not indicate a model to a particular specification or standard (e.g. all models with German smoke deflectors are not numbered R078, just the locomotive issued between 1993 and 1996).

There are many options, even on that model!!

I prefer the R3443 model - mine runs absolutely superbly and looks just like the Lloyd's Bank advert - without the American toot of course! Sacrilege!

I have this model in my collection, brought new in 1998 from Southampton Model Centre for 54.50. It was built 10 2 96. Other than being taken from the box to look at it, has never been run, or even displayed, sadly as many others in my collection, especially of that time period.

The model does indeed feature German style smoke deflectors and the double chimney.

Keep an eye on eBay, they do exist.

I have 8 versions of Flying Scotsman and gave up collecting them a while back. I sold the single chimney BR green one ages ago. That I bought for £5 in Morecambe on a day out with my wife about 1974. If I wanted to continue with a FS collection I would need that, a black version and blue one. I have the "ready to go to the USA" version, with cowcatcher but not inc lamp and bell. That came later in that silly "gold" finish.
