railwayinspector Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Has anyone else had the same problem as me with the chasis? The wheels will turn 3/4 of the way round, then lock up. With a bit of pressure applied against the lock, they continue to turn until the same point, where they lock again.I have tried oil, check the alignment of the wheels and so on, nothing seems to sort this problem EXCEPT losening the centre screw for the con-rods. I cannot leave it like this though otherwise they drop out and the conrods drop out of place.Anyone know of any tips on solving this before I go about a no-doubt expensive repair job?
poliss Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 I presume you mean that the wheels get stuck when being powered on the track? How old is the loco?
railwayinspector Posted July 7, 2011 Author Posted July 7, 2011 Not just when powered (these are the free turning ones under James' Body- not the motorized ones in the tender- my bad- forgot to post that), they stick even you roll the engine along off-track.It is quite an old model (2004 or thereabouts I believe) but it's had this problem since its second year in my ownership- just not got around to doing anything about it as I was too young :P
The son of Triangman Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 The wheel quartering is most likely out, one wheel has slipped on it's axle I suspect this will cause the rods to lock up.
poliss Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Turn the loco upside down and check that nothing on the connecting rods/valve gear is getting snarled up.
The son of Triangman Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Could be a jammed contact fouling the back of a driving wheel I agree but the usual culprit is a slipped driving wheel on the 0-6-0 SSPP chassis, the chassis is known for this fault. The loco is essentially an SSPP 0-6-0 chassis with leading bogie added. Rods are simply two bog standard connecting roads either side and the body is the old Tri-ang 3F body much modified and extended to form James.
The son of Triangman Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 If the loco is s/h then a missing rear axle spring could also play it's part as the SSPP chassis has a sprung axle.

Fishmanoz Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I agree with SoT - a wheel quartering problem. If you do a forum search on quartering, you'll find a post from me on how to adjust this.
