High Fell, BR (NER) in TT 120

It’s been mighty breezy oooppp North this weekend so I worked on a little project go create a Gantry Signal Box for St James’ Quay. Just like on the real railway a shortage of space meant the answer was going up and it would also have good sighting across the quayside. I found a cheap gantry crane kit online, got another of the lovely In The Green wood Laser GNR signal boxes, some strips of profile and raided the scrap box. A mash up of bits and we have a Gantry Signal Box. I’m hoping the new ‘Green Wash’ will settle down a bit as it’s still very shiny not like the Black wash I usually use, spectacle related purchase error. There is something about trains going under these types of structures that adds the industrial feel I wanted for the docks and a contrast to the open countryside on main section.

  • 2 weeks later...

It seems Thunberg PetroChemicals’ thirst for Hydrocarbons has reached new heights! A pipe direct from the ESSO facility on St James’ Quay has been installed via and over the line gantry.

10 done and 4 left to go, I like to leave a break in between doing them so they all look different. It’s all easy stuff but would people like a video on how I do it, very similar to the way it’s done in club magazine and no airbrush or expensive bits needed and very simple skills 😁

A video is far better than words, which for something like this is not easy to understand and do.

Get them all done...I did 6 retaining walls in one go. Never again 😂

It's the ballasting I find a trial, I know it's worth it, but I can't say I enjoy the process.

I have done that much ballasting now it's become easy. It wasn't when I first did some. Like every thing really the more you do the better you get at it 😀 Like retaining walls 🤮

Ballasting is one of the jobs that I don't mind doing,  I enjoy laying the track, wiring and ballasting.  Its when it comes to doing the main scenery that I tend to get bored and want to start again lol... 🙂

I used self adhesive ones, as long as the backing board is properly sealed they stick well.

In fact the ones that were behind my ex slot car track, may well be repurposed for the shed layout, as they are still looking good after 5 years.

I.D. backscenes  they were IIRC, not cheap but the high quality ones really do last well.

Been busy soaking up the glorious weather up here in Land of The Prince Bishops with some epic bike rides including along what was Britain’s Highest Standard Gauge line to Blanchlands and down the remains of the Crawley Engine ropeway line (super exciting descent) to Stanhope and check out Weardale Railway. The area is littered with coal and lead mines and Limestone quarries that powered the Industrial Revolution  with energy, metals and building materials and the essentials for making steel!

Few pics of those adventures and what a damp day today has resulted in 😁

A really great set of images.  I am big fan of High Fell MR.

I noticed that you have some oil storage tanks near the dockside.  Where are they from?

i have bought some TT120 scale tanks and pipes from DPAR 3d but the tanks seem small when alongside the TTA tankers.
