JohnfMacduff
I have converted a large garage under the house. It is centrally heated, well insulated and with good quality double glazing but in part it is below ground level. For some reason the humidity level is consistently around 65%. My baseboard is very solid - 12mm ply and built on 3 x 2s with plenty of cross-bracing so I am not worried about warping the baseboard but I'm worried about storing running delicate equipment like sophisticated locos and DCC control equipment in 65% humidity. Does anyone have any views? Do I need to install a de-humidifier?
96RAF
I just checked and my house is sitting at 65% RH. My train room (converted garage) is also 65% RH so as my meter shows range 40-70 as Normal then I assume there is nothing to worry about. Many electrical device specs give both a storage range and an operating range for temperature and humidity. When storing aircraft we had the dehumidifier kit set to maintain 45% RH and that was dry enough to prevent corrosion from damp and preclude removal of electronics boxes. ntpntpntp
Sounds ok. Garden railway folk have to be careful about not storing DCC locos and the system electronics in "raw" garages and sheds to avoid condensation etc. Mine is always brought indoors. ntpntpntp
Just to add, we have 3 little portable temperature and humidity monitors around the house, they're all showing 40-50 for humidity.
