Andrew-359968
Hello, is there any such thing as a clear display case to put Hornby train sets (or any train set/pack) for that matter in so the train set original box and contents are protected. Rather like the clear plastic boxes made to hold film media and merchandise collectible boxed figures? If so, who sells them?
Gordonvale
I googled "clear display case" and got dozens of hits. I'm in Australia so I don't know how that would go in your neck of the woods.
Aussie Fred
I got mine from IKEA and they have stores throughout the world, I think. It is a DETOLF glass door cabinet, white, with lighting included. I got 2 but the new train room was too small for both, so only one made it there. To be honest it was a question of a bit bigger layout of having the 2 cabinets and the bigger layout won, naturally. P-Henny
Reading Andrew's post. I don't think he is looking for a 'Display CABINET'. He is looking for plastic BOXES that are just slightly bigger than a retail train-set box. It seems he wants to put his models / sets in their original retail boxes, then put those boxes inside a plastic box for additional protection i.e. not necessarily a box for display, just protection.@Andrew, suggest you confirm exactly what you are looking for, to prevent this thread from digressing into yet another 'Display CABINET' thread. Andrew-359968
Yes P-Henny, you are spot on. not display cases/cabinets of which there are loads of places that do them, but as you say "put original full train set in its retail box and put such box inside a clear plastic box for additional protection i.e. not necessarily a box for display, just protection.I spent a few hours last night googling and looking at all sorts of companies but seems unless one wants to spend £100-£200 for clear plastic boxes depending on size and thickness quality, they don't really seem to exist, it seems.Thanks. Topcat2018
@A3I don't think you are going to have much luck finding anything at a reasonable price, when you look at the price of boxes to hold just one loco or coach. If I wanted to do this, and assuming you want to see the front of the train set box where the contents are visible, my approach would be to make a box with a plywood base and PSE timber for the sides, with a sheet of 5 mm acrylic as the lid. If you don't want the display feature make the lid of plywood as well. You can buy acrylic sheet cut to any size and a good timber merchant will cut your plywood and timber to size, then it's very basic carpentry to pin and glue it together. A couple of hinges and latches and Bob's your uncle.A wood/plywood box shouldn't cost too much to make but an acrylic lid would probably add around £30, depending on the size of the box. P-Henny
No idea if these two sites have the size and price you want, but they may be retailers you haven't previously found yet.Really Useful Products Ltd - Welcome - Buy Online Now!Plastic Storage Boxes & Accessories | Plastic Box ShopThe first one above sell boxes I have purchased [not for storing model railway bits] and the quality is first class. Some [not all] of their box products have been seen in my local 'Hobby Craft' store.
Brew Man
I've got one of RUP's boxes for my modelling tools and materials, and as the name suggests, they are really useful. They come in a huge variety of sizes too.
AndyMac1707817969
The Really Useful Storage boxes I get from Argos or Homebase who stock them. Unlike many of these storage boxes they are stackable and the mechanism that keeps them shut do not rely on using bent plastic as hinges that will eventually suffer from fatigue bending.
