Class 08 loses sound after a while

In a previous thread I mentioned that my Class 08 was losing sound after a while but that I needed to clean my track before going any further. Well I did that today and it's still doing it, though I think the sound is there but reduces to a whisper. My Prairie is not affected and will run round my layout all day chuffing away. It's also not the App as it does it in DCC mode as well. I ran out of time today but tomorrow I will re-install the sound profile to see if that cures the problem. If not I'm stumped. Anyone else experienced this?

Only two choices really, either the speaker is duff or the sound amp in the decoder is dying. Trying another profile will confirm if the fault is in the 08 profile (very unlikely) or in the decoder. You can prove the speaker by simple replacement with a known good one. My money says the amp is cooking after a while.

I'll take what you say on board, Rob and check it out tomorrow. What I could do first off is swap first the speaker and then the the decoder as I have a spare set. Can't imagine it being the speaker though as it works fine..... until it doesn't grinning.

Thanks

Well, turned out it was the speaker after all. I'm surprised by that I must say, but there again, I'm not that familiar with the technology in sugar cube speakers.

I don't think I'll bother getting a replacement from Hornby though. It's a lot of faff sending it back for such a low cost item and I do have two or three that I bought from R & R a while back.

I've noticed another problem in the App though regarding CV 29 for which I've started a new thread.
