Mark-360734
Without dismantling my loco first, how can I tell if I need an 8, 18 or 21 pin decoder?
Brew Man
Look the product up on the manufacturer's website and it should tell you there.

Brew Man
Look it up on Model Rail Database, it should be listed there. What R number does it have? If it's a Hornby model as you suggest, of the three pin configurations you mention it is likely to be 8 pin., but some of their smaller models have 6 pin. Fishmanoz
If it’s a current model, click on it in the Shop, scroll all the way down to Specifications and there it is.
Brew Man
He said he can't find on Hornby's site so I guess it's an older model.
Bulleidboy
If he found the loco being sold on ebay, I'm sure someone selling will have put the R number - and may be more?
RDS
@Mark-360734If you can't find the R number to give the exact model, please post a picture on here and someone will be able to identify it.Having said that, you will need to dismantle the Loco to fit a decoder, so you may as well do it straight away and be absolutely sure.
