Peter in Oz
Just wondering if anyone else has found significant differences between 3p and 5p ringfield motors. I spent 2 days speed matching a pair of HST's (both dcc loksound 3.5's) and had to set the 5p motor cv 5 at 64 (top setting) yet the 3p motor is at 22. Is such a large difference usual? Going Spare
Yes, as has been pointed out in your thread about wheels, the 5-pole ringfield motors are lower-geared than their 3-pole counterparts to give smoother running particularly at low speeds. ColinB
I didn't know that but it is probably obvious, the 5 pole motors have totally different gears grey verses black. They also draw less current.
morairamike
I was lucky enough to find a 5pole armature that had been modified to replace the 3 pole in my 9F on eBay about 5 years ago. It improved the running and the low speed was greatly improved. Eventually I changed it to CD motor and now it's excellent at low speed. I run using Gaugemaster Prodigy DCC.
