Well this build is going better than the last ๐Ÿ™‚

This kit is the original tool from 1966 but in the 2011 boxing.

First job was create a new Instrument panel as the kit one is completely the wrong shape and difficult to fit.ย
There is now an IP decal on the sheet so I think they realise this. Just a piece of plastic sheet did the trick.

You can probably see the canopy is way to thick once again.

The current instructions would have you put the radial engine in from the front of the cowling but this left the reduction gearbox protruding too far out of the cowlingย  and just didn't look right.
I then downloaded a set of original instructions which shows the engine going in from the rear of the cowling and looks so much better.๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
Not sure if you can see but there is a small notch in the lower left of the cowling which allows the fuselage mounted gun to fire through. If you use the locating tabs on the cowling this moves the notch to the wrong side. Cut away the locating tabs and positioned the cowling correctly.
Still need to clean up the inside of the cowling from where I glued the engine. Must remember to dry fit first ๐Ÿ™‚

So here we are so far. Just waiting for some RLM65 to turn up and I'll start to paint

Picked a bunch of kits up about 10 years ago when the local hobby store closed down ๐Ÿ˜ž

They've been sitting in a box ever since so it's about time they were put together

I have a pair of newer sword kits in the build pile, They came with a Gladiator. A version of a dogfight double I suppose.

The sword kit looks nice, has a bit more detail than the Airfix kit

Speaking of Dogfight Doubles,ย  the S2 Arado makes a good pair with the S1 Whirlwind.ย  The latter type's first encounter with an enemy was with an Arado over the Channel. They shot each other down.ย

Good info! I have a whirlwind or two.ย

A word of advice for anyone building this ... add weight to the front of the floats. It sits on the back of the floats otherwise. Really should have thought about this ๐Ÿ˜ž
Gives me an excuse to create a water diorama though and glue it in. Another learning curve ๐Ÿ™‚

The old or new instructions don't mention this but 3-4g in each of the floats should do it. More if you put the weight in the nose.

They do belong in the water after all.

Ahem...beaching dolly...catapult.ย :classic_wink:ย :classic_biggrin:ย Admittedly, building a water diorama is probably easier than scratch building a catapult or dolly.

Progress so far sans floats. Very dark colours but I guess if you are looking down on it with the ocean underneath ...ย
(so why not put bright yellow wingtips so it's visible from underneath!)ย ๐Ÿ˜†

A few touch ups needed and floats are next

That's the floats done. Now some gloss and get the decals down. I'll add the floats to the airframe after. Not sure how I'm going to weather this yet, I suspect these would have taken a bit of a beating.

Not entirely sure about Vallejos rendition of RLM72 & 73. You can hardly see any demarcation lines. Maybe the matt varnish will help at the end. No going back now ๐Ÿ™‚

Loving this! This is one of those kits that I've wanted to build for years but never got around too. Your painting is superb and it does look like it's gone together well.ย

Nicely done!ย

That's it finished. The rear gunner is on a charge for losing the machine gun somewhere over the Atlantic ... Grrrr ( I could have sworn I put it back in the box)

I would like Airfix to have another go at this with a new tool, I think it's a really interesting subject and some good stories to go with it as well. Not many surviving though.
ย think I'm going to have to make another but not Airfix this time, as some of the others have better detailing. I might even try the 1/32 if I can get one cheap enough.

Fairly easy build but on hindsight I wish I'd removed some of the raised detail, Apart from being too much of it, the foot/hand holds as they are in completely the wrong place.

Cheers

Ian
