Battersby
It appears that the DCC Ready socket is in the tender for the R2999 Thompson B1 loco, but the instructions from Hornby are somewhat contradictory. A package came with the loco containing an insulation sleeve and the instructions DO NOT OPERATE THE DCC UNIT WITHOUT THE INSULATION SLEEVE BEING IN PLACE and a picture showing the insulation sleeve covering the R8249 decoder. However the instructions with the R8249 decoder say do not wrap the decoder in insulating tape as the decoder requires a cooling smooth air flow across its surface. So, what do you do? Or am I being thick?
Rog RJ
An insulation sleeve is not the same as insulating tape and should be safe to use. However, many ppl, myself included, generally prefer to leave the decoder uncovered and make sure there is nothing metal for the decoder to come into contact with by covering any exposed metal with insulating tape. Kapton tape is probably the best as it doesn't go slimy and gooey like ordinary insulation tape can.
