Help for point motor setup

You have two choices really.

1. Full digital (DCC) operation from the controller which will need point and accessory decoders to operate the point motors. Each Hornby point decoder can operate 4 points individually.

2. Use analogue switches such

as the Hornby passing contact switch R047 https://www.hornby.com/shop/power-and-control/r044-passing-contact-level-switch and a separate power supply, usually 16 volts AC. For this you will need one switch for every point motor. If you have the Hornby 4 amp

powers supply it is possible to use the 15 volt dc accessory output of the Select or Elite. It is also possible to use non locking toggle switches with a sprung to centre action or stud and probe, (AKA electric pencil) often used with a mimic diagram.

In

both cases you will need to fit a point motor to each point, either side mounted ( https://www.hornby.com/shop/power-and-control/r8243-surface-mounted-point-motor/ ) or under board mounted ( https://www.hornby.com/shop/power-and-control/r8014-point-motor/

)

Many ppl find it easier to use switches as controlling the points and the trains digitally can be quite tricky. DCC point operation is (IMHO) best reserved for computer operation where point decoders are essential.

Can I suggest you get a book

and have a read. I suggest "The newcomers guide to model railways" by Brian Lambert. There are many other titles available too.

Hi Allistair,

If you are looking for something really simple (much simpler than the previous suggestion) then look at the TT300 point motor. It has everything built in including the decoder and screw connectors for leads that can either be connected

straight to the rails or the controller. I've just fitted 10 to a layout and control them using the Hornby Elite. I've also used Railmaster to control them. They also give the option to connect LED's to display the turnout direction and manual push buttons

to change the direction. I used these options giving another dimension to the layout.

I've been so impressed that I've ordered another 10 for another layout I'm building. If you do a search on the internet for TT300 manual you'll be able to download

the instructions so you can have a detailed look before you decide if you want to buy it.

Regards, Tim
