81F
I am reasonably confident about hard wiring a chip to the motor on this one but what do I do about the light - which colour wires should I use?

Fishmanoz
81f, it's a simple conversion, all you have to do is insulate both brush holders from the spring and connect to orange and grey with black and red then to the pickup wire and chassis. Then as magfan suggests, you have a choice of what you connect your lamp to, and whether you use the one supplied or convert to an LED. For a start, blue is the common positive and must be used on one side. White and yellow are designed for directional lighting with white lit when the loco is going forward and yellow in reverse. Assuming you want the light on all the time when want it, you would use green or purple and program them for latched on (continuous) when you switch it on. The existing lamp just needs to be connected directly. An LED needs a series resistor but has the advantage of only drawing a few milliamps. And it's anode must be connected to blue. I would probably go with the existing lamp until it blows, then convert to LED. Just one thing, the 8249 is unlikely to cope with this arrangement as the motor plus lamp will draw more current than it can handle, particularly if not LED lamp. I would use the Sapphire or other brand with a rated 1 amp continuous output. 8249 is only 500mA.
