Hi Anthony, welcome to the forum. No argument with your choice. The trick is to get a subtle hint planted in the heads of the right people , and perhaps they might just arrive on 25th December. good luck.

If I remember rightly the differences between a Stanier design Princess Coronation 46220 to 46255, and the Ivatt modified design 46256 & 46257 involves a completely different cab with short rectangular side sheets, a revised cast steel trailing truck (a bit like the one under the Britannia), and the reversing rod a prominent diagonal structure along the bottom of the firebox sheeting on the left hand side, but otherwise is broadly similar. I don't know if the cab on the modern Hornby models is a seperate moulding, but if it is it shouldn't be that difficult to make an alternative.

Somehow however I think HAI spoiled the magnificent Stanier outline by cutting away the bottom of the cab side sheets, however the roller bearings made all the difference, Brian Haresnape suggested that these two were the finest heavy express passenger engines in Britain. I might not agree myself as I think that the Jarvis rebuilds of Bulleid's Merchant Navy class represented the pinnacle in BR days, only beaten by 71000 when the preservationists subsequently corrected all of Riddles' design and Crewe manufacturing faults.

All that said, the Stanier Pacifics were always a delight to watch and to ride behind. My last trip was behind 46255 from Euston to Penrith in 1963.

Many apologies, fazy. I have just checked in my Winter Edition 1960/1 Ian Allan ABC combined volume and, yes, there are stars aginst those last two. They are there to indicate that these locos were introduced in 1947 as an Ivatt development with roller bearings and detail alterations. Thanks for prompting me on that, LC, and welcome to the forum, a_p. I'd fetch my coat again but I'm already wearing them all!

Hi Fazy

It looks nice up to now. Please try to remember to post some more photos when it's finished so we can see the end result. I'm sure it will be worth seeing!

Any pictures of your girlfriend might have got past the Discriminator if she had a tender behind and smoked!

Do any photos exist of the Ivatt Lizzie? I can't tell the difference from that pic!

Certainly there are a lot of photos about. Regretably I don't have any other than in books which cannot be posted here (copyright)

Look at the hight and shape of cabsides, and the bogie is totally different to the Stanier locos.

I was just comparing some photos of the original and the Ivatt on Google. The Ivatt rehash almost looks as if it was never finished properly. I understand it had roller bearing which improved things but what was the point of changing the cab?

Type the names of the locos in your browser and look in the photos not the web bar. Should be quite a few. City of solford. William stanier. They had a different tender compared to the rest of the class too.

I think the only good-looking loco class of Ivatt's was the 2-6-2Ts. Beautiful little tank locos. I well remember them pulling the "Blizzie (Blisworth) and Welly (Wellingborough) Flyers".

His moguls weren't that attractive, especially with a double chimney which made them look even worse. I believe, however, several standard class locos emanated from that design.

Hi graskie unfortunately I am to young to remember any steam working for a living. The ivatt tanks are handsome. But i think the stanier 2-6-2t has better proportions on the boiler. Definitely at certain angles anyway. I have put a picture up of one brand new one just out of works.. its in the more black 5, 8f if interested. I have to admit that it's one of my favourite negatives.

The Ivatt 2 tanks were called 'Teddy Bears' on the Southern, but I have never found out why. Most South Eastern crews liked them, for the work they were intended, as they replaced the 0-4-4Ts on empty carriage work into London terminals, parcels trains and local freight work. Faversham used them a lot on the Sheerness to Dover and Sheerness to Strood local passenger turns until electrification sent them west to Nine Elms and Eastleigh.

The other LMS design popular in East Kent in BR days was the Fairburn 4MT 2-6-4T. Ramsgate and Ashford used these on local passenger and freight work, in particular the roundabout 'Miner's trains' serving Snowdown, Shepherdswell (for Timanstone), Chislet, Sandwich, Deal and Minster (for Betteshanger), and Faversham and Ashford too. They replaced elderly SECR 4-4-0s and their enclosed cabs were much appreciated in the cold winters so common in East Kent. Prior to Bachmann bringing out the Fairburn, I scratch built a superstructure for one on the original Hornby Fowler 2-6-4T chassis which had an incorrect short wheelbase, but was in fact right for a Fairburn!
