BR Blue Stanier Pacifics

Alessio

I've just seen for sale second hand a Hornby model of the LMS Princess Royal 46210 Lady Patricia in BR Blue. I had no idea they'd ever modelled a Stanier Pacific in EPBlue. Is this a relatively rare model? Are there many others in BR Blue

On an aside note, I realised today that when BR added 40000 to loco numbers, Stanier's pacific's numbers became 462 (ie their wheel arrangement) and then their number in the sequence... is that really just a happy coincidence?!

There are indeed other Stanier Pacifics in Early BR Lined Blue, Alessio. Ones I have found are:

R.138 46208 "Princess Helena Victoria" produced 1994/5

R.037 46210 "Lady Patricia" produced 1989/90/91

R.775 "The Caledonian Train Set" including 46239 "City of Chester" produced 1994/5

There might be one or more others, but I don't think so.

Watch out for tender and loco drive.

Have a look at

I have had several of these locos but sold them on. I'm waiting for them with sound, if ever that happens. It's a beautiful livery.

From Ramsay's Guide the model may be either:

R.037 1989-1991 with a guide price of GBP55 for an excellent unboxed to 80 for a mint in box.

R2448 2005-2006 which is weathered and is DCC ready for GBP85 excub - 105 mib

(The usual Ramsay's caveat is that the prices are a guide only and you buy for what you are prepared to hand over.)

As for the numbering, the Princess Royal Class began with 6200 'The Princess Royal' so unless Ridley had influence over how the machines were numbered I would say the renumbering done by BR would be serendipitous rather than out of any deference to Stanier his predessor in the LMS.

Ramsay's also identifies the following LMS models in BR Blue as opposed to LMS blue (is there a difference?):

R.372 46231 Duchess of Athol (Spec Edn) 1992 50 - 65

R.208 46239 City of Chester  94-95 (also from R.775 the Caledonian set Graskie mentioned) GBP50 for the loco

R2386 46225 Duchess of Gloucester 2004 60-90

R2553 46237 City of Bristol 2006-2007 DCC ready 85-105

R2303 The Royal Scot set 46224 Princess Alexandra  2002 85 loco only

R3111 46241 City of Edinburgh DCC ready 2012 105-130

Then there were ex-LNER models as well!

My goodness, choral sea, thanks for that! I had a feeling the odd one might have escaped me, but how on earth could I have missed it? I thought there was a weathered blue Princess Royal and actually had that one myself but sold it on because it had no sound and hoping Hornby might bring out such a thing. It replaced a previous tender drive loco, but went because I only buy  loco drive sound ones nowadays. I only have Hornby's maroon R 2990XS 46208 "Princess Helena Victoria" with sound at the moment.

Ridley??? I meant Riddles.

Graskie, there were quite a few in BR blue and don't forget the ex-GWR King! If I had the money I might have collected those too. As it is a Royal Scot Train Pack with A3 Lord Faringdon passed through my hands and my wife claimed it! Honest, she did!

I have a BR B12 (Bachmann) that I bought from eBay here in Australia that was fitted with sound and weathered here down under and a Hornby BR Clun Castle XS. I bought them just for the sound as my main interest is GWR steam. I've fitted two of my GWR Railcars with MyLocoSound.

Hi choralc

The numbers of the Pacifics all beginning 462.............?

Pure co-incidence. When the locos were built by the LMS their numbers all began 62.. It was only at nationalization that 4 was put at the front of all LMS numbers. So unless Sir Bill had a crystal ball it couldn't have been planned.

As an aside, at the same time as the LMS were putting the 4 on, the Southern renumbered their locos with a 3 (ignore the Bulleid pacifics - they were different). The LNER put a 6 at the front of theirs but be very carefull. The LNER had renumbered their fleet from 1946 so you cannot just add the 6 to an LNER model without checking the number. Out of interest one loco, when the LNER renumbering was worked out, found it had the same number so didn't need renumbering. The B12s actually reverted to their pre-grouping (pregrouping - pre 1923) numbers en-masse.

Hope this helps.

Fascinating. I love the combo of BR Blue + Crimson&Cream coaches.

In response to whomever mentioned LMS Blue, I believe that could either refer to the Caledonian blue as seen on the first 5 (I think? I'm tired) Coronations, or the experimental dark blue livery trialled by the LMS fairly late on.
