Bob12345 Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Hey guys. For the past couple of years now, I have been looking forward to using Hornby Modelling Rock and yesterday I found out that it had been discontinued. I checked everywhere on the web from Amazon to ebay and it was nowhere. Could you tell me if there is anywhere where I can buy it or if there is something like it coming out. thanks, Bob12345
2e0dtoeric Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Search for 'modroc' or 'plaster bandage'. Same stuff, different manufacturers.
Bob12345 Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 Thanks 2e0dtoeric! That will work great for me! Thanks for the quick reply!
Yelrow Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Bob, hi its not cheap stuff. Hospital supply companies, sell it in bags, often offcuts. Used to be smith and nephew. Same stuff as used in hospitals. Worth a try. john
Bob12345 Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 Thanks yelrow I'll have a look! Hassan.
Yelrow Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Bob, look at Tiranti, 15cm, 2.7 metres long. john
Bob12345 Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 Yelrow, the tiranti product what is it called because I'm not sure which one of their products it is. thanks, Hassan
Graskie Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Alternatively, Bob, I believe you can still get, say, Blackpool Rock. It might not work but you could just suck it and see.
rayarpino Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 There is, of course, the tuppence ha'penny solution:Old newspapers or pieces of cloth cut in strips and dipped in plaster mixed thick like cream.Don't know what the plaster rate is today but it's nowhere near gold....
37lover Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 I bought a roll 150mm x 80m 4 years ago, can't remember how much I paid. Still have about a third left and although the label says use within a year I used some last week and it's still fine. If you know roughly the area you will be covering I would suggest multiplying by 3 to work out how much bandage you need, that's actually two layers but with overlaps. So for 2m2 of landscaping buy 6m2, if 150mm wide that would need 40m long. I wouldn't say it's expensive, but certainly not cheap, the great Auction site has rolls of 150mm x 80m for under £30 [search for modroc]. Based on my experience unless you're really sure you will need all that buy a smaller quantity. Having said that I think I ended up putting three or more layers down but that was because I had so much bandage spare, I have often spread a thin layer of plaster/filler over the bandage.
Graskie Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 When I built a hillside with tunnels going under it years ago, I shaped it with chicken wire and then pasted papier mache over it. I seem to remember it worked quite well. Presumably yelrow uses Plaster of Paris.
Yelrow Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Please dont forget london is the 6th biggest city in france, so quite a few will get plastered in london, also. john

Graskie Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Aren't all Parisiennes plastered? :-)Sorry to step in here as a cunning linguist, 2 Erics, but "parisiennes" are female. Male inhabitants are "parisiens." So, if you wish to refer to male and female occupants of Paris, you should still use the male version.

As I said earlier, this is the cheapest and also very efficient way of doing it. But I prefer textiles to paper. Old towels, old table cloths, bedsheets, whatever. Better if they are cotton though.Cheers
