TTS sound

You switch the sound on using Function 1 or you can just use a single function for individual sounds, such as a whistle to play, with the chiffing or coasting not switched on. If you don't want to hear any of the sounds you don't have to use them.

It makes me smile that I spend money on TTS sound equiped locos and then for most of the time don't use the sound. I tend to use the sounds when moving off from a station and shunting. My little lad likes having the whistle sounds but If I'm just watching a loco hurtle round I tend to not use any sound as it does drive me mad after a while.

I have recently taken delivery of the Gadwell TTS and am I very pleased. The are other threads about the general factory set sound level(s) and my first impression is that the default setting [mid range] is quite loud. However, that was running on my rolling road on the kitchen table and the loco may seem quieter when running around the layout. You do realise that the sound levels can be adjusted?

I'm hoping over Christmas to be able to play with the sound settings and I'm planning on reducing the volume but I'm still not a fan of having the sound on all the time. I have a Duke of Gloucester and Cock o' the North but am having to wait until Christmas Day to be able to play with Gadwell. My wife insists it sets a bad example to the children of I open my presents early !!!

Yes, m_duck, you don't have to have sound on. With any sound loco you just don't press the sound function on if you want to run it without sound. Then just drive it in the normal way.

I quite often have to reduce sound volume, especially with my DoG which is still a bit too loud for my layout room at the overall volume lowest setting. Virtually all other more expensive full sound locos can be reduced to almost total silence. If you really want, you can set a TTS loco's sound effectively off by setting the overall volume CV to 0, but then you would, of course, have to go to the bother of returning that CV value back to get sound once again.

Best and most convenient method is therefore just not to press any sound buttons.

Sorry, WTD, I have just been discussing my latest ailments with the missus. No, it would obviously be embarrassing to return it to the family. Just don't run it if you don't want to. I realise it's a sensitive issue in this matter. If you really want a smart witty reply, I could probably work one out, but I do appreciate the sad surrounding circumstances.

That's OK Graskie just winding you up. I didn't think the sound would work on DC but amazingly it does but only the basic ones, ticking over, moving off, whistle, bell and chuffing. As it's a USA steam loco I just have it on display.

It does concern me though that eventually all locos will be DCC sound that works on DC. Perhaps they'll have to fit a small switch to disconnect the speaker.

I reckon they'll only make DCC fitted quite soon. As they work on DC why make both. Not sure about sound being standard for quite a while though. I don't really worry about anything PJ. It was just a turn of phrase.

Hi WTD

I agree with your comment on sound. I think there will be both for a long time yet.

I also agree regarding not worrying about anything. Is it wisdom, older age or learning to live with what ever life throws at you?

PJ
