NormanQ4
I am I right in believing that TTS sound can be turned off if not wanted using Railmaster/E-link?I read in one post that the sound drove the writer mad.
m_duck
You switch the sound on using Function 1 or you can just use a single function for individual sounds, such as a whistle to play, with the chiffing or coasting not switched on. If you don't want to hear any of the sounds you don't have to use them.It makes me smile that I spend money on TTS sound equiped locos and then for most of the time don't use the sound. I tend to use the sounds when moving off from a station and shunting. My little lad likes having the whistle sounds but If I'm just watching a loco hurtle round I tend to not use any sound as it does drive me mad after a while. I have recently taken delivery of the Gadwell TTS and am I very pleased. The are other threads about the general factory set sound level(s) and my first impression is that the default setting [mid range] is quite loud. However, that was running on my rolling road on the kitchen table and the loco may seem quieter when running around the layout. You do realise that the sound levels can be adjusted? m_duck
I'm hoping over Christmas to be able to play with the sound settings and I'm planning on reducing the volume but I'm still not a fan of having the sound on all the time. I have a Duke of Gloucester and Cock o' the North but am having to wait until Christmas Day to be able to play with Gadwell. My wife insists it sets a bad example to the children of I open my presents early !!!
walkingthedog
If my locos came with sound and I couldn't turn it off I'd get rid of them. I hope that sound doesn't become standard for DC.
Graskie
Yes, m_duck, you don't have to have sound on. With any sound loco you just don't press the sound function on if you want to run it without sound. Then just drive it in the normal way. I quite often have to reduce sound volume, especially with my DoG which is still a bit too loud for my layout room at the overall volume lowest setting. Virtually all other more expensive full sound locos can be reduced to almost total silence. If you really want, you can set a TTS loco's sound effectively off by setting the overall volume CV to 0, but then you would, of course, have to go to the bother of returning that CV value back to get sound once again. Best and most convenient method is therefore just not to press any sound buttons.
PJ_model_trains
As mentioned this has been discussed before and probably will be many timss in the future. The setting are far to high at default, I have turned mine to 1 but wish I could go even lower. 1 is the lowest setting, as Graskie says, the only other option is 0 but that switches it off completely. Hi WTDYou can always switch sound off.But if you don't want sound at all why waste money buying a train with sound?PJ
walkingthedog
You're missing my point. I wouldn't buy a loco with sound but it is quite possible that all locos will be DCC fitted with sound in the future. I have a DCC loco with sound and as I'm DC I can't switch off the sound. Graskie
Aha! Got you, WTD! So that's yet another disadvantage of DC!
walkingthedog
No Graskie the disadvantage is that DCC has sound. I can permanently get rid of it by fitting a blanking plate. If in the future all locos are only available DCC with sound I shall buy no more.
Graskie
So why did you buy that one then, WTD, when you should have known you couldn't silence it?

Graskie
Sorry, WTD, I have just been discussing my latest ailments with the missus. No, it would obviously be embarrassing to return it to the family. Just don't run it if you don't want to. I realise it's a sensitive issue in this matter. If you really want a smart witty reply, I could probably work one out, but I do appreciate the sad surrounding circumstances.
walkingthedog
That's OK Graskie just winding you up. I didn't think the sound would work on DC but amazingly it does but only the basic ones, ticking over, moving off, whistle, bell and chuffing. As it's a USA steam loco I just have it on display. It does concern me though that eventually all locos will be DCC sound that works on DC. Perhaps they'll have to fit a small switch to disconnect the speaker. Graskie
No, I think DC will just be phased out over the years as some of us oldies still using it get phased out.
walkingthedog
There's no need to do that as DCC works on DC.

Hi WTDDo you really worry about things so far in the future? Surely that would be a long way off.To plug or not to plug that is the question?PJ
walkingthedog
I reckon they'll only make DCC fitted quite soon. As they work on DC why make both. Not sure about sound being standard for quite a while though. I don't really worry about anything PJ. It was just a turn of phrase.

I think there will be both for a long time yet.I also agree regarding not worrying about anything.
