compmore Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 had my layout wired up ok but ocassionally had problems with the points.New dog ripped out all the wiring so need to redo.what is the recommended wire size to run from the 8247 decoders to connect to the wires on the surface mounted point motors.some of the motors will be up to 4' from the decoderssuspect last time the wires i used may have been too light.Rgds,Geoff
Rog RJ Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I would recommend 16/0.2 as a minimum. 24/0.2 would be better.
96RAF Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Although Hornby surface mounted point motors have very thin wiring attached this only needs to fire it's own motor.upstream of each motor you need heavier cable as Roger suggests to carry the electrical load with adds up with each motor installed along the way.imagine many things plugged into a main extension adapter. The adapter cable is much thicker than say the lamp or plugged in device cables In order to carry the load.
2e0dtoeric Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Don't quite see what you are suggesting, RAF, the only common wire to all the motors would be the black return one, otherwise ALL the points on the layout would change, if there was enough urge in the CDU to do it, every time you moved the lever!Even so, thicker wire is better, because A) it is stronger, and B) it doesn't 'lose' as much power!
Fishmanoz Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 The thing about the thin wire on the point motor is that it is short so not a big total loss. With longer runs, cheaper wire is needed.
2e0dtoeric Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Cheaper wire - at about 2p a metre, who cares about the cost when you are going eight feet?(There's nothing like mixing measurements!)
Fishmanoz Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Delete cheaper I see heavier. It's the C instead of the space again did that.
gilbo2 Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 I used 7/0.2 on mine, with similar 4' runs without problems. Less strands to fit to the R8247 decoders too ;-)
Flashbang Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 HiAge old question, so please read my post here https://www.hornby.com/forum/post/view/topic_id/8108/?p=1 three up from the bottom of the page....
Fishmanoz Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Delete cheaper I see heavier. It's the C instead of the space again did that. Good grief! That should say delete cheaper insert heavier.
poliss Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Remind me of what computermabob you're using Fishy, so that I can avoid buying one in the future. :-)
Fishmanoz Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Ipad is the offending one in this instance and it's my finger problems really. Just got a new laptop too. Went upmarket with a Lenovo Yoga Pro 3. I like it.
compmore Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 thanks guys i'll try the 16/0.2 rgds, geoff
Yelrow Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Fishy, interesting machine, reads well, two faults, windows 8, and according to reviews, overpriced, but nice piece of kit. Like watch hinge. john
Flashbang Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Windows 10 is on the horizon! Wonder if that will be any improvement on 8?
Teedoubleudee Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Windows 10 is on the horizon! Wonder if that will be any improvement on 8?Blimey, what happened to 9? ;-)

Like watch hinge. john Personally don't have a problem with 8/8.1 and am running a little program that gives you a standard 7 desktop anyway. And I'll be hanging out for 10 too. As for price, I agree but I got it at $600 below RRP and I thought that was ok.
