CarlisleSettle Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Having received such a wonderful surprise on christmas morning a gift from my Daughter & Husband which contained Hornbys R3245TTS DDC Fitted Class A1 'Tornado'. The last time I received a loco was when my late parents bought me the ELD12 46232 'Duchess of Montrose' in the late 50s. I can still smell the paint from it now when I first opened the box. Sadly I gave away all my Hornby Dublo when I started driving and the female species came around.Getting to the point! Being in receipt of my old age pension last month, that gives away my age, I have not got any space for a track layout sadly.I thought I would do some research into what I need to run this 'Tornado'. I thought the following purchases will do the trick? 1 - R8211 Rolling Road2 - R8214 DDC Elite Controller. Would this give me around 18 sounds which I thing is the full range of sounds? Where the R8213 would only give me 7 to 8 sounds.I cannot have Elink Railmaster as I do not operate Microsoft Windows, my laptop is a Macbook Pro. Please correct me if I am wrong regarding the above. Do I need any other item to run this loco.Any advice will be welcome as it's been a long time since my boyhood times.CG
poliss Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I presume you have some track and a DCC power clip/track?You don't really need the rolling road, but it's always nice to have one.Yes, the Elite will be fine. :-)Nothing else is needed, but you can always add more later.

Graskie Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Welcome to the forum, CS. You could do what you suggest but the Elite is rather expensive. As you say, the Select controller is rather limited, though, if you want to experience the full range of sounds. A rolling road is also expensive compared to a a metre or so of track, but you obviously want to see the loco's movement and hear its full range of sound functions for a reasonable period of time as well. I don't really know about the MacBook for compatability with RM, but a cheap second-hand Windows laptop could be used with the e-Link, and could probably be just as cheap or even a cheaper option.
CarlisleSettle Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Thanks @polissThanks for the reply. I have no track or a DCC power clip. I thought I would just couple the power leads from the Controller to the connections on the rolling road and that would do the trick? First I have to persuade my dearest that I have to go to the expence of buying the Elite controller.CG
CarlisleSettle Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Thanks also Graskie. Never thought of a second laptop option? I wonder how I would tell my dearest that I need another laptop. Roll on Christmas 2015.
poliss Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 That's fine. You don't need anything else. The only reason I mentioned DCC power clips/track is that the analogue versions contain a capacitor the interferes with DCC running.
Fishmanoz Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 You can always flip open the cover from a DC power clip or power track and remove the capacitor that causes the interference. And RM seems to work fine with Windows emulation software on Mac. Look in the RM forum as there has been recent discussion of a particular one that works. Even endorsed by HRMS I think. That would avoid a second laptop.
choralc Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 With your MacBook, dependent on its age, you may be able to run Windows on it. All Macs after a certain date can be configured to start up with Windows. You will of course have to buy a Windows OS and have it installed using Apple's (free) Bootcamp software.
96RAF Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 I use a Hornby rolling road extensively to run my locos as my layout is too short to really let them loose. Excellent bit of kit although you need extra rollers is you want to run a double bogie diesel.other makes of rolling road are available which have rollers that stand on your normal track. The Elite at Rev 1.41 allows you to switch function groups 0-9, 10-19, 20-29 So you will be able to operate all of the TTS sounds.
