Does Select's option "enable analogue" permit risk-less locos ?

Hi Jimbo, you risk permanent damage to an old analogue loco if you use the digital controller even in 'analogue' mode. Far better to use a battery holder with 3v or 4.5v and touch the leads onto the motor contacts to establish any life assuming you have already checked that the motor and gears are free to rotate and not seized.

Do NOT use any DCC controller, even in analogue mode (model zero) on a DC model because the controller still puts 16v 'alternating' current on the track. While the dc loco is running, it won't do much harm, but it will be rather noisy, but if you 'park' it somewhere, such as in a station, the motor is still getting 16v pulses, which will burn out a coil very quickly, because the motor isn't turning, to 'share' the load.

DCC can kill a DC loco in seconds.

Depending on the age of your model. It could just be that the motor has done it's hours. See the manual to check how long it's supposed to last. If it's not mentioned, then it might just be a loose wire.

If it's just the motor, they can be replaced.

Thanks HB for the warning. I have made up a12 volt 0.5 amp wheel cleaner so can confirm the old Palitoy "Collett" 4-4-0 is definitely defunct. Probably cheaper to buy another (£20 !) than try repairing, which is beyond my abilities anyway. The poor soul gave quite a few hours of nice service, so that's some consolation isn't it. Nice looking engine though.
