Can sound be fitted to the Kenilworth Castle?

Dear All,

I have a Hornby R2232 Great Western 4-6-0 Kenilworth Castle steam model which was part of the Cornishman set.

The model is already DCC ready.

If possible I would like to fit sound to this model and I wish to ask if any forum member has made this modification and if so do they have any recommendations as to which sound card / speaker combination would be suitable.

I have removed the body from the tender to examine the interior and there are 3 weights fitted to the chassis but there does not appear to be any pre-formed location for a speaker In the plastic moulding.

I look forward to hearing from anyone with their suggestions / comments.

Regards

David

Hi David, further to my post I note that you have the latest Kenilworth Castle which is, indeed, already DCC fitted. As Tony indicated you will probably have to modify the tender to install a speaker and find a route back into the loco if the decoder is there.

Thank you both for responding.

I have not looked inside the model but clearly the DCC decoder board is fitted inside so I assume I would need to connect a sound card located inside the tender to the DCC connector In the loco.

I have looked on-line at the different sound card options but I do not know which to select to best suit the application. I already have the Hornby Flying Scotsman with sound which works perfectly from my point of view but I do not think they offer the sound cards as a spare / add on part.

I have no problem with the practical side (soldering, wiring etc) but I think it may be a wise move for me to find a company to supply a suitable sound card and speaker and let them install it into the model for me. Clearly it would be the more expensive option but as I have never done this before it it may be the way to go.

kind regards

David

There are other's, but Olivia Trains do a mail order sound fitting service. These will be the more expensive Loksound sound decoder products. As you have already identified, the cheaper Hornby TTS decoders are not available as upgrade components. There are some cheaper "Mylocosound" sound decoders, but these tend to be aimed at the DIY fitting market. The generic 'paid for' sound fitting services tend to use the Loksound decoders.

.

Just to clear up any misconception. A standard sound decoder replaces any non sound decoder that may be fitted. It is not in addition to i.e an additional sound card as you have termed it. There are exceptions to this. There are some self contained products that give a sound effect but are not DCC controllable. These type of products are usually cheaper and are separate sound boards from your standard DCC sound decoder. They work by detecting movement. Typically they will be located in a tender or in a wagon being pulled by the loco and quite often powered by a separate battery.

You can get sound only decoders Chris. They're common in the US.

.

That would fall into my "exceptions to this" clasification then. But to be honest, I can't say that I've ever come across these in the UK market, so I wouldn't consider them to be UK standard sound decoders. But point made accepted all the same.

David, relating to your topic title (using your name), perhaps a review of this thread might help when deciding to create a new topic post.

.

I daresay that Admin at some point will change your topic title to something more meaningful. Admin will probably move it to the DCC section as well at the same time, so bear that in mind if you come back here (General Section) and find your post missing.

Once again thank you all for your comments.

Firstly I was not aware that the sounds were not generated by a separate board linked to the DCC decoder which controls the loco.

As you have suggested I will contact a few of the DCC Specialists to get their recommendations for s suitable decoder and their quotations to carry out the work.

Sorry about my error in creating a topic title. When I asked the original question I thought I had entered a title 'Sound' so I was surprised to see 'David' as the subject title.

Once again an example of my limited experience using the Forum.

Regards

I would also look up some videos on Youtube to hear what the various decoders sound like. Remembering, of course, the limitations of the recording.

Possible that your name appearing as the title instead of sound is a bug?
