Hi and welcome to the forum.

I have a B12 too, but I think Hornby have made a few versions over the years, mine has a newer 'can' motor with a white plastic end and has a capacitor/resistor thing soldered across its input terminals.  Is yours like this?

Can you not solder it back into place or make good the break?

According to Ramsey number 8509 was applied to B12s made between 1970 and 1979. This gives model numbers  R866, or R389. R389 was a CKD kit.

R866 has X04 motor, and the suppressor is soldered to the lead that comes up from the pick-ups by the worm and pinion and also is soldered to the insulated side clip of the motor feed, and is then attached behind the motor fixing screw at the back of the motor (Service sheet 86). East Kent Models advertise part M1260 as a replacement for X297 suppressor, if you need to replace it (£0.50. each but minimum order £5 mail order). You may be able to source these elsewhere.

Being a novice I am not sure I have made myself clear to you , this photo illustrates the problem, as you can see the thin wire is broken, not sure if this could be fixed, by the way the ref for this model is RB55- -0610, Despite having it from new I have never run it, had it for  over ten years it was stood on my desk, besides the problem with the wire could the motor it be siezed up.?

Agreed there should be a brush secured by the V shaped spring on both sides of the motor commutator. The side with the connection from the pick up has to be insulated too.

However some further observations after looking at the picture.

The suppressor is most likely to be inside the tubular sleeve behind the motor magnet. There should be a wire lead from a pick up plate on the underside of the chassis to the red wire / suppressor. The other side of the suppressor should be earthed to the chassis. Check to see there is one, as it is not visible in the picture. The pick up plate is essential, and one other thing to check is that it still contains the wire pick ups that press on the backs of the driving wheels.

The motor looks like a later X03 type which is a development of the X04, although this should not make a difference, unless you need to swap the motors. The worm and gear are a different pitch.

Thanks magfan/trainlover/roger b, the brush is still there, this model is configured opposite to the one shown in triang x.04 picture, what is weird is the fact that I have never opened up this loco and yet the sleeve was missing from the arm of the spring ( manufacturing fault?) I mean have you come across this sort of thing when opening up new loco's?. Any way I need to source a replacement spring and take it from there. Incidently  magfan the armature does run smoothly so I guess that the problem will be solved once this spring is sorted. thanks again all

Success!!

Thanks howbiman, ordered the spares from peterspares, got them this morning and fitted straight away , problem solved, the B12, 8509 is swinging merrily away as I type this on a temporary test track set up on my dining table, the first time its run since new over ten years ago, its that long ago that I can't honestly remember when I bought it.

Also the problem of missing parts has been solved, my wife, God bless her,  has 'coughed up' she said that she has dropped 'the thing' at least twice whilst 'dusting' !! and wondered what that little bit of metal was on the floor ( brush plate) but thought that I would never run the engine anyway and so said no more about it.. happy days.

Thanks again to all who have guided me on this, my first excursion on the forum, glad I found this site, all the best to all.
