the ferret
May I take this opportunity of thanking Hornby Ltd for their latest addition to Southern Railway locos, namely the Class 700 no. 695.With this model you have finally laid to rest a ghost that has been in my memory for many years. I have this memory of a rather narrow boilered 0-6-0 with inside framed tender ruling out any possibility of it having been a Stirling O1 (outside frames on the tender). When I looked at a photo of the Class 700, the chimney just was not tall enough. It could not be this loco - or could it?Opening the box and looking at this model finally brought my memory back to life. IT WAS THE CAPUCHON!!!!. When I watched these engines from my pushchair as a small child (I am now 77), they still had the chimney capuchons and it was this that made the chimney appear much taller than it actually was. On later photos (Wikipedia) the capuchon had been removed. Faced with your model - here is the solution to my hazy memories. This is DEFINITELY the loco.Again, thank you so very, very much!!!
