Slipping gear

Hi Maso and welcome to the forum,

From your brief description it sounds like the gear on the drive axle has split.

If this is the case it can be replaced and how easily depends on the parts being available from Hornby. You will have to look up the service sheet for your James model and see what part is required and contact either Hornby or a parts supplier to see if it is available. It will most likely be a whole wheel set that is needed.

You may be able to replace the gear only, but this will involve removing and replacing one of the wheels. Replacing will require correct alignment - quartering - to ensure correct running.

As for the Inter city model. Is it the same problem? More detail is needed as well as a better description of the model. If you have a local model shop they may also be able to help.

Best of luck

By "small first gear", Maso may be referring to the (silver alloy?) gear on the tender motor shaft - a common fault if the model is a few years old - and this can be replaced with brass equivalent part S2290.  As it also is likely to have a Ringfield drive, the same probably applies to the "Inter-City".
