Dukedog.
Hi All Just a quick few questions What coaches have lights. Do any other manufactures produce coaches with lights. Is it just the Hornby pullman that has lights or do they, did they do others. Thanks in advance.
atom3624
There are quite a few manufacturers as well as different Hornby coaches with lights. Personally I have the Pullman and also LMS blue streamlined Coronation coaches - not certain how many others there are. Hornby also have those Period 2 (pre-Grouping) 4- and 6-wheeled coaches with 'wand activated' lighting. Bachmann certainly have several different coaching sets with lighting. Accurascale have coaches with lighting. Don't forget there will be certain 'multiple unit' sets which may have lighting. Always check the manufacturers' websites for more specific details. One thing to note, for those coaches picking up from the tracks, they require some form of pickups / contacts. The worst by a long way are the wipers on the LMS coaches which cause quite considerable drag - this is exaggerated by the poor placement of the brake shoes which can also catch. 3 general ways coaches pickup power are: Wipers on the insides of the wheel flanges - these can be fine tuned a little to permit contact to limit drag. Wipers on the axles - a more reliable way, and generally give less drag. Contacts where the pinpoints of the axles are placed in the bogie frames. Some other coaches, and indeed some aftermarket kits are generally battery powered, which will require you to open up the coaches to replace the batteries, depending upon how frequently you use the lighting. Going Spare
In the recent past (c2014), Hornby also briefly offered a few Mk1 coaches with interior lighting and, further back (late 60s/early 70s), Mk2a coaches.
