paul_perkins
hi been looking at the dimensions of the airfix kit of the sherman and its 3.4 cm wide so should be able to fit on the lowloaders
Jon Murnaghan
Hi Colin,The Churchill tank, like all British tanks, had to fit inside the railway loading guage but it was necessary to remove the air intake boxes from the sides to make it fit. They were only bolted in place for this reason. The Airfix Churchill is 4.7cm wide with the boxes but only 3.9cm without them. So the answer is to build the kit with the air intake boxes stowed on the engine cover. The Airfix Churchill is 1/76 scale which is the same as 00 scale. Most other kits will be in 1/72 which is a little larger.I like the Airfix Churchill even though (or maybe because of) all the tiny wheels and suspension arms. Here's one I converted into a Mk.VIII.../../../media/wysiwyg/Airfix/Forum/jon_murnaghan_tank.jpgJon
Jon Murnaghan
Ooh! My tank got squashed! :-)The original image is 800x600 pixels NOT square. But it looks like I can't edit it now.Jon
Ratch
All Airfix AFVs are 1/76 scale and compatible with 00 scale. Some have appeared in boxes saying they're 1/72 when in fact they're 1/76.See here...http://airfixtributeforum.myfastforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=1679
colin_mitchell
hi jon. thanks for the advice and the photo! hope i can do a nice a job as that one! unfortunately my lowlaoder is only 3 cms wide, im making a hornby dublo 3 rail layout. i need to find perhaps a wider wagon or did the tank hang over each side a bit?regards colin
Ratch
Colin, you need to find out the loading gauge. This is the maximum width and height permissible on the railway.00 gauge = 4mm to the foot.
