What -  Official photograph of an aluminium constructed cement tank wagon made for the Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers (trading as Blue Circle) in 1960 by Gloucester RCW. A fleet of them were made for carrying cement from a cement works at Cliffe in Kent to Uddingston in Scotland. Later they were used from Hope in Derbyshire and also from Dunbar.  Some of them derailed at Thirsk and were hit by an ECML express hauled by diesel prototype DP2.

Known as 'LA's they lasted into the 1990s. The later 1962 Met Cam batch had detail differences, and because of weaknesses the aluminium solebars all were strengthened above the wheels with a perforated aluminium plate welded to the outside.

Why -  The old Tri-ang model was quite popular but hopelessly innacurate. It was built to fit the Horse Box chassis so the solebars were extended out to the width of the tank which spoiled their otherwise sleek appearance. Other liberties were taken with the dimensions.

A typical early diesel era type which brought BRCW/Sulzer type 3 Bo-Bos to York double heading on block loads of these wagons. An EE class 4 1Co-Co1 took the train forward to Scotland.

Where - Probably Gloucester at time of delivery.

This is one at Hope in the late 1980s. The one behind is a Met Cam version.
