walkingthedog
Sorry can't think of anything apart from scenic items I suppose. I like it when they stop making things and bring out new products.
LCDR
A lot will always depend upon the era and location that you are most interested in.If one assumes we are talking about the BR steam era 1949 -1968 then the following are pretty much universal.BR Mark 1 BSK and CK carriagesBR Mark 1 BG and CCTSR PLV Luggage VanLMS 50ft Bogie Brake VanBR 16 ton Mineral WagonBR 12 ton Ventilated van20 ton 'Air Ministry' type Tank Wagon22 ton BR / LMS / LNER Plate WagonBR 22 ton Presflo Cement wagonBR 20 ton Grain VanBR/LNER 20 ton Standard Goods Guards vanGWR/BR 11 ton Cattle VanGWR 20 ton single ended Goods Guards VanLMS 20 ton Goods Guards VanBR Standard 350hp diesel shunting locomotiveBR 4MT 2-6-4T / LMS Fairburn 2-6-4TLMS 5MT 4-6-0GWR 57xx 0-6-0PTAnd that is pretty much IT. The reason is that all these would have commonly worked in four or more regions at one time or another. Certain other BR Standard types could be included, especially the 7MT Britannia, 5MT 4-6-0, 4MT 4-6-0, 4MT 2-6-0, LMS Ivatt /BR Riddles 2MT 2-6-0, Riddles 3MT 2-6-2T, Ivattt / Riddles 2MT 2-6-2T, WD 8F 2-8-0, and 9F 2-10-0 (But not Crosti or Evening Star!) Adding in diesels the Brush Type 2 A1A-A1A and Type 4 Co-Co, English Electric Type 1 Bo-Bo, Type 3 Co-Co, and Type 4 1Co-Co1, Sulzer/Derby Type 2 Bo-Bo, Sulzer type 4 1Co-Co1 and Brush Type 5 (Class 56). The Metro Cammell and BR Derby blue square twin DMUs should also be staple products. Bringing the story a little more up to date (diesel era late 20th Century) - The HST, Class 142, 150 & 156 DMUs are all essentials together with the class 56 diesel. Mark 2d/e carriages might also be included. For goods stock I would suggest the HAA Merry Go Round hopper , FGA/FFA freightliner flat, BAA steel carrier, VDA van, SPA open wagon , TTA tank wagon, TEA bogie tank wagon. and Blue Circle PCA cement tanker. I shall draw a veil over the post Privatisation era . Not my scene at all!

Anything Western
Thank you very much for your views the ideas you have put forward are precisely what I have thought of although I would have added SK or SO whichever is the most common and being a Western man maybe a hall
LCDR
Taking that theme further adding in the common pre-Nationalisation types then the Hall is definately a strong contender, with the Black 5 of course, and for Eastern Region, the B1 and the Southern the Maunsell 'N' 2-6-0. If you wanted to add heavy goods engines then the 2884/3800, Stanier 8F, O2 2-8-0s and Q1 (0-6-0). Drilling down further becomes more difficult as the regions start to fragment into smaller areas. The Fowler 3F tank and 4F tender, the various Ivatt 2MTs , the LNER J50 and N2, and the GW 57xx, 94xx, 56xx all had wide distributions, but other LNE classes and almost all Southern classes were very much restricted in area of operation. Versatile express passenger classes could include Castle, Jubilee, Royal Scot, A3 & V2, Bulleid Light Pacific and Maunsell N15 King Arthur. Interestingly nearly all these locos are usually included in the main ranges.
